Ni-MH cells lose voltage in storage. If a pack sits in a warehouse long enough, resting voltage can drop below the threshold the base station checks before it begins charging. Many DECT bases will show a fault light or simply not initiate a charge cycle when they see voltage below roughly 4.0V on a 4.8V pack. The fix is to prime the pack with a brief external charge using a standalone AA Ni-MH charger until voltage climbs above 4.2V, then reseat it in the handset. Once the base detects a valid voltage, the charge indicator should activate within two minutes.

Handset loses pairing with the base after battery replacement

Removing the battery from a DECT handset cuts power to volatile memory, and some older DECT implementations store pairing data in RAM rather than flash. When that happens, the handset comes back up with no base registered.
