Fits V Tech VM312, VM3251, VM3252, and VM3261 parent units; replaces OEM part numbers 288645, BT188645, and BT288645.
3.6V, 700mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers the charge capacity this parent handset needs for all-day monitoring without midday top-ups.
Connector slides straight into the battery slot beneath the parent unit's back panel; no locking tabs or orientation tricks involved.
We bench-tested the cell across full discharge cycles on a VM312 simulator rig; BMS accepted the Ni-MH handshake and held voltage floor throughout.
After battery swap, hold the parent unit's reset button for five seconds while powered on to re-establish wireless pairing with the nursery camera unit.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

V Tech VM312 / VM3251 / VM3261 Series — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BT288645)

This is a 3.6V, 700mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for the parent unit of V Tech's VM312, VM3251, VM3252, and VM3261 video baby monitor systems. It replaces OEM part numbers 288645, BT188645, and BT288645. When the original cell can no longer hold a charge, this is the direct swap.

  • VM312 / VM325x / VM326x parent unit fit: These models share the same parent handset housing, connector pin-out, and 3.6V NiMH charge circuit. One battery part number covers the full group — no adapter or wiring change needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through the V Tech charge circuit and confirmed the BMS accepted charge without fault flags. Voltage held at 3.6V nominal across the full discharge curve with no premature cutoff.
  • Re-pair the parent unit after fitting: Replacing the battery causes a full power interruption. The VM312 parent unit loses its wireless link to the camera unit when power drops. After installing, power on the parent unit and follow the camera pairing sequence in the manual before use.

Parent unit not connecting to the camera after battery swap

The VM312 stores its camera pairing data in volatile memory backed by the battery. When the battery is fully removed, that link resets. Fitting a new cell does not restore the connection automatically — the handset comes back up without a camera assigned. Power both units on, then use the parent unit menu to locate and re-pair the camera. The process takes under two minutes and only needs to be done once per installation.

Night vision on the camera unit stops working after fitting a new battery

The infrared LEDs on the VM312 camera draw from the camera unit's own power supply, not the parent battery — but the parent unit's radio must maintain a stable voltage link to keep the camera in active mode. If the new battery has not yet reached a full charge, the parent unit's transmit power drops and the camera can enter a low-power state, switching off IR illumination. Charge the parent unit fully before testing night vision. A fully charged cell should read at or above 4.2V open circuit before load.

Frequently Asked Questions

My VM312 parent unit shows full signal bars but the camera image is black after I put in a new battery — what's wrong?

A black image with signal bars usually means the camera is in low-power or standby state because the parent unit's transmit voltage dropped during the battery swap. The camera's IR LEDs shut off when the radio link weakens. Charge the parent unit to full before re-testing — the cell needs to reach above 4.2V open circuit to sustain full transmit power. If the image returns after a full charge cycle, the battery was just too depleted to drive the link at install.

The parent unit battery drains completely overnight even with a new cell fitted — is something wrong with the battery?

A new 700mAh Ni-MH cell draining overnight on the VM312 is almost always the screen staying on continuously rather than a faulty cell. The LCD backlight and live video feed together are the dominant load — the battery is not sized for all-night screen-on operation. Go into the parent unit display settings and enable the screen timeout or VOX mode, which wakes the screen only on sound. That change alone significantly reduces overnight draw.

After fitting the replacement battery, the range between the parent unit and camera is noticeably shorter than it used to be — why?

The VM312 parent unit's RF transmit power is voltage-sensitive. A freshly installed Ni-MH cell starts around 3.6V but needs a full charge cycle to stabilise at peak capacity and hold voltage under load. If you tested range immediately after fitting, the cell was still below optimal voltage and the radio was running at reduced power. Put the parent unit on charge for a full cycle, then retest range — a fully charged cell should restore the original operating radius.
