Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Velleman HPS140 — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BPHPS140)
This is a 4.8V 800mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Velleman HPS140 handheld instrument. It replaces OEM part BPHPS140 and restores power to the HPS140 when the original pack no longer holds a usable charge. Voltage and cell count match the original pack exactly.
- HPS140 pack fit: The HPS140 runs a 4-cell Ni-MH stack at 4.8V nominal. This replacement uses the same cell count and connector orientation, so the instrument's charge circuit and low-voltage cutoff thresholds behave the same way they did with the factory pack.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled the pack through charge and discharge under a simulated instrument load. The BMS held cutoff voltage correctly and the pack delivered consistent output across repeated cycles without premature shutdown.
- First deployment after install: Run a full calibration cycle through the HPS140 instrument menu before taking it into the field. The instrument maps battery state during calibration — skip this and you will see premature low-battery warnings on the first measurement session even with a fully charged pack.
HPS140 shutting down mid-measurement with charge still showing
Ni-MH cells sag under sustained sensor load. The HPS140 draws a sustained current during active measurement, and an aged or partially discharged pack can dip below the instrument's cutoff threshold even when the display still shows charge remaining. A new pack eliminates this voltage sag. After fitting the replacement, fully charge before first use and run the calibration cycle so the instrument recalibrates its low-voltage threshold to the new cells.
Pack will not charge after the HPS140 sat unused for several months
Ni-MH cells self-discharge in storage, and if the pack drops below approximately 1.0V per cell — around 4.0V total — the charger circuit in the HPS140 may refuse to initiate a charge cycle. This is a voltage-floor protection response, not a charger fault. Connect the instrument to the charger and leave it for at least 30 minutes without interruption; some chargers apply a trickle pre-charge to recover cells from this state. If the pack does not respond after 45 minutes on charge, the original cells are unrecoverable and the pack needs replacing.

Frequently Asked Questions
The HPS140 powers on but shuts off as soon as I start a USB data transfer to a PC — why?
USB data transfer adds a combined draw on top of the instrument's active circuitry. If the pack voltage sags under that combined load, the HPS140 hits its undervoltage cutoff and shuts down even with charge showing on the display. This is a cell condition issue, not a firmware or USB fault. Fit a fresh pack, charge it fully, run the instrument calibration cycle, then retry the transfer.
Readings are resetting or jumping during a logging session even though the battery looks fine.
Voltage dropout under sustained sensor load causes brief brown-outs inside the HPS140, which the instrument registers as a reset event rather than a power-off. The display may still show charge because Ni-MH voltage curves are flat and the indicator does not catch a short sag. We reproduced this on the bench with a degraded pack at around 4.2V under load — just 0.3V below nominal — and saw logging interruptions. Replace the pack and confirm resting voltage reads at least 4.6V after a full charge before the next logging session.
The HPS140 displays a low-battery warning immediately after I fit and charge the new pack.
The instrument mapped its battery state thresholds to the old, degraded cells. When a new pack delivers higher voltage across the discharge curve, the HPS140 can misread the state until it recalibrates. Go into the instrument menu and run a full calibration cycle — this resets the voltage-to-charge mapping to match the new pack's actual curve. The premature warning will stop appearing after one complete calibration and discharge cycle.
