Fits Vertex Standard VXA-710, VX-5, VX-5R, VX-5RS and five additional models; replaces OEM battery FNB-80.
7.4V and 1400mAh capacity sustains full transmit power and extended standby on these compact handhelds.
Gold connectors slide straight in; locking tab seats flush against the radio battery slot.
We bench-tested the pack across sustained PTT cycles; BMS accepted the dock handshake on first insertion without fault indication.
On initial charge with a Vertex dock, remove the battery after ten minutes and reseat it firmly — the platform needs contact confirmation before the bar indicator advances past one bar.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Vertex Standard VXA-710 / VX-5 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This 7.4V, 1400mAh lithium-ion battery replaces the stock pack on the Vertex Standard VXA-710, VX-5, VX-5R, and VX-5RS handheld transceivers. It fits the same contact footprint as the original and the BMS speaks the same handshake the dock and radio expect. No OEM part number is listed for this SKU — match your radio model against the fit list before ordering.

  • VXA-710 and VX-5 platform fit: These models share a common 7.4V two-cell architecture, the same rear-contact strip geometry, and a BMS protocol the dock polls on first insertion. That shared spec is why one pack covers all variants in the series.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through transmit-load draws on the VX-5 platform. The BMS held the discharge curve cleanly through sustained PTT bursts and did not trigger overcurrent cutoff under normal keying patterns.
  • First-insertion contact check: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, pull the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Vertex dock runs a contact-integrity poll before it accepts the BMS handshake — a film of handling residue on the contacts is enough to fail that check.

VXA-710 cuts out mid-transmission on a new battery

A new pack arrives at storage voltage — typically 3.7V per cell, around 7.4V total — not at full charge. When you key up, the transmit current spike can pull that already-low cell voltage below the BMS protection threshold, triggering a momentary cutoff. The radio interprets this as a fault and drops the transmission. Charge the pack to full in the dock before the first use and the BMS will have enough headroom to handle the PTT surge without tripping.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting this pack

The VX-5 series uses a voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar maps to a fixed cell voltage range, not a fuel gauge chip. A new pack at storage voltage reads in the lower threshold band and displays one or two bars even though capacity is full. Put the battery through one complete dock charge cycle first. Once the cells are at their rated top-of-charge voltage, the indicator will read correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

The VXA-710 drops to low transmit power partway through a shift — is this the battery?

Yes, and the cause is voltage sag under sustained RF output. As the cells discharge, internal impedance rises, and the voltage drops far enough under transmit load that the radio steps down TX power to stay within its operating window. This is normal cell behaviour, not a fault with the pack. Charge the battery fully at the start of each shift and monitor whether the sag point moves earlier over successive cycles — if it does, the cells are ageing and the pack needs replacing.

The dock never moves past the blinking charge LED with this new battery — what's wrong?

Most dock acceptance failures on the Vertex platform come down to one of two things: contact residue blocking the BMS handshake poll, or the cell voltage sitting below the dock's acceptance floor after extended transit storage. Start by wiping the gold contact strip with a dry cloth and reseating the battery firmly. If the LED still blinks after five minutes, place the pack in a different known-good charger if you have one, or try a ten-minute charge with a compatible external Li-ion charger to bring the cell voltage above 7.0V — at that point the dock should accept it.

The battery won't trigger a charge cycle at all after sitting unused for several months — is it dead?

Probably not dead, but the cells may have self-discharged below the dock's recovery threshold. Vertex docks typically won't initiate a charge cycle on a pack below roughly 6.0V because the BMS flags it as a potentially unsafe deep-discharge state. Use a Li-ion charger with a recovery or trickle mode to bring the pack up to 6.5–7.0V, then transfer it to the dock. If the dock accepts it and charges normally to full, the pack is recoverable and should perform as expected.
