Fits Vertex Standard VXD720 portable radio; replaces OEM battery VXD720.
7.4V and 2600mAh capacity sustains full RF output across back-to-back transmit cycles without sag-induced power reduction.
Slide connector seats flush into VXD720 battery slot with positive contact at top; locking tab clicks audibly when seated.
We bench tested this pack on a VXD720 test set — BMS accepted dock handshake on first insertion with clean gold contacts; voltage held steady under sustained 5W TX output.
If the charger dock shows fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly — Vertex platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS before charging begins.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Vertex Standard VXD720 — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This 7.4V 2600mAh Li-ion battery replaces the factory pack in the Vertex Standard VXD720 portable digital two-way radio. It fits the VXD720 directly and matches the original voltage rail and connector format. Capacity is rated at 2600mAh (19.24Wh) as tested under steady-state load.

  • VXD720 platform fit: The VXD720 runs a 7.4V nominal rail with a multi-pin BMS handshake at the dock interface. This pack matches that voltage rail and contact layout, so the charger dock and radio both recognise the battery without manual override.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through simulated PTT burst loads — the BMS held stable through repeated transmit-current spikes without tripping overcurrent cutoff. Full charge acceptance was confirmed on the standard Vertex dock.
  • First insertion contact check: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Vertex platform requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging begins.

Why the VXD720 cuts out mid-transmission on a new battery

New Li-ion cells ship at storage voltage — typically 3.6–3.7V per cell, not full charge. When the radio draws peak transmit current from a partially charged pack, the BMS can interpret the voltage sag as an undervoltage condition and interrupt output. This is not a fault with the battery. Charge the pack fully before first field use and the BMS will have enough headroom to sustain PTT current draw without cutoff.

VXD720 bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected on a new pack

The VXD720 uses voltage-threshold bar indicators — it reads the pack's resting voltage and maps it to a bar level. A new cell at storage voltage sits below the threshold for a full bar display, so the radio correctly shows a partial reading. This is not a capacity defect. Fully charge the battery first; once resting voltage stabilises above 8.2V, the indicator will reflect the actual charge state.

Frequently Asked Questions

My VXD720 drops to low transmit power halfway through a shift even though the battery bar still shows two bars — what's happening?

Sustained RF output draws more current than standby, and as the pack depletes, voltage sags under that load even when the bar indicator hasn't dropped yet. The radio's protection circuit reduces TX power before the BMS trips a full cutoff — this is normal low-voltage throttling, not a faulty battery. The bar indicator on the VXD720 updates at rest-voltage thresholds, so it lags behind real-time load conditions. Charge the pack before shifts where sustained transmission is expected.

The pack sat unused for several months and now the Vertex dock won't accept it — the charge light just blinks and never settles.

Extended storage allows Li-ion cells to self-discharge below the dock's acceptance threshold — typically under 6V for a 7.4V two-cell pack. Most Vertex charger docks won't enter normal charge mode if the incoming voltage reads below that floor. Remove the battery, wait two minutes, and reseat it firmly to allow the dock to re-sample the pack voltage. If the dock accepts it, let it trickle up from that point; if the blinking continues after three reseat attempts, the cells have dropped below BMS recovery threshold and the pack needs replacement.

I pressed PTT on the VXD720 right after inserting the new battery and the radio cut out immediately — is the pack defective?

This is a BMS overcurrent response, not a defective pack. Transmit current on the VXD720 spikes sharply the moment PTT is pressed, and a new cell at storage voltage has less voltage headroom to absorb that spike before the BMS interprets it as an overcurrent event. The fix is straightforward — charge the battery fully before use. Once the pack reaches 8.4V at full charge, it has enough headroom to sustain the PTT current surge without triggering BMS cutoff.
