Why the DVR-850W shows the wrong battery percentage after a cell swap
The DVR-850W uses a coulomb-counting fuel gauge IC that builds its discharge model from the original cell's charge curve. When a new cell goes in, that stored model no longer matches the actual cell chemistry. The gauge reads voltage offsets against stale reference data and reports percentages that are off by 10–20%. One full discharge-to-shutoff cycle followed by a complete charge forces the IC to rebuild its curve against the new cell. After that single cycle, percentage readings stabilise.
Sudden camera shutoff while the percentage still shows 25–35%
This is a voltage cliff failure, not a capacity problem. Li-ion cells cannot sustain output voltage under load once internal resistance climbs past a threshold — the DVR-850W's processor sees voltage drop below its minimum operating rail and cuts power instantly. The fuel gauge, which tracks charge by counting current rather than measuring load voltage, still thinks capacity remains. If this happens on a new cell, run the first-cycle calibration sequence described above. If it persists after two full cycles, check that the battery contacts in the bay are clean and making full contact — oxidised contacts add resistance and trigger the same cliff at a higher remaining charge.

The DVR-850W percentage jumps around — it shows 60%, then 80%, then drops to 40% without recording anything. What is going on?
The fuel gauge IC in the DVR-850W is running a stale discharge curve from the old cell and mapping new cell voltage readings against it — the mismatch produces erratic jumps. This is not a defective battery. Run one full discharge to automatic shutoff, then charge to 100% without interrupting. That single cycle forces the IC to recalibrate its coulomb counter against the new cell's actual curve, and percentage readings stabilise.
The camera shuts off the moment I start recording, even though it just read 50% battery.
Recording triggers the highest current draw the DVR-850W produces — the sensor, processor, and write buffer all draw simultaneously. If the cell's internal resistance is elevated (common on a brand-new cell before its first full cycle), voltage sags below the processor's minimum rail under that combined load and the camera cuts out. The percentage reading is irrelevant at that point because the gauge measures charge, not instantaneous voltage. Complete one full discharge-charge cycle first; if shutoff persists after two cycles, clean the battery bay contacts with a dry cotton swab and reseat the cell.
The DVR-850W will not power on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for a few months.
Li-ion cells self-discharge in storage, and if this one dropped below approximately 2.5V per cell, the BMS has locked the cell out to prevent damage — the camera sees no voltage at the contacts and will not boot. Place the battery in the camera, connect the USB charge cable, and leave it connected for at least 30 minutes without attempting to power on. Most BMS circuits have a trickle-charge recovery path that brings the cell back above the lockout threshold; once voltage recovers past roughly 3.0V, normal charging resumes and the camera will power on.
