Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Zebra DS8100 / DS8178 Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (82-176890-01)
This 3.7V, 2400mAh Li-ion battery replaces the original pack in the Zebra DS8100, DS8170, and DS8178 handheld barcode scanners. These are corded and cordless imager models used in retail, warehouse, and logistics environments for high-volume scanning and data capture. OEM part numbers covered: 82-176890-01, AS-000231, and BTRY-DS81EAB0E.
- DS8100, DS8170, DS8178 compatibility: These three models share the same battery bay dimensions, 3.7V cell architecture, and BMS handshake protocol — one pack covers the full cordless DS81 platform without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through the DS8178 charge and scan cycle. The BMS held steady across rapid trigger bursts, and the cradle registered a clean charge handshake with no fault codes on repeated dock-and-undock cycles.
- First-shift preparation for pick-and-pack use: Place the scanner in its cradle for a full charge cycle before deploying on a shift. Scan trigger inrush current is highest when the cell is near minimum voltage — starting from a full charge prevents false BMS trips during the first hour of heavy scanning.
Cradle showing a charging error on a new pack
A new pack can trigger a charging fault at the dock even when the battery itself is fine. The most common cause is contact resistance at the dock or battery terminals — oxidation, dust, or a misaligned seating position interrupts the communication line between the pack's BMS and the cradle's charge controller. Wipe the gold contacts on both the battery and the cradle slot with a dry lint-free cloth, then reseat firmly until you feel the pack click into position. If the error clears, the fault was contact-related, not a defective cell.
Scanner losing wireless connection during rapid scan bursts
The DS8178 draws simultaneously from the radio module and the imager during a rapid scan sequence — both spike current at the same moment. If the cell voltage sags below the radio module's minimum operating threshold during that combined draw, the wireless link drops and requires a reconnect. This happens more often with a partially discharged or aged pack than with a freshly charged cell at full capacity. Start each shift with a fully charged battery and check that the pack contacts are clean — sag is worse when contact resistance adds to the load.

Frequently Asked Questions
My DS8178 stopped reading barcodes right after I swapped the battery — what's wrong?
The imager needs a minimum voltage to fire reliably, and a new pack straight out of packaging can sit well below full charge after storage. Put the scanner in its cradle and run a full charge cycle before use. Once the cell is at capacity, the imager draws enough power to illuminate and capture cleanly. If it still fails to read after a full charge, check that the battery is fully seated and the contacts are making clean contact.
The cradle keeps flashing a fault light on my new DS8100 battery — is the dock broken?
Most likely not. The cradle's charge controller communicates with the pack's BMS through the contact pins, and any dust, oxidation, or slight misalignment breaks that signal. Remove the battery, wipe the gold contacts on both the pack and the cradle slot with a dry lint-free cloth, then reseat until it clicks. If the fault clears, the issue was contact resistance. If it persists after cleaning and reseating, test the pack in a second cradle to isolate whether the fault follows the battery or stays with the dock.
Our DS8178 scanners run noticeably warm after a long pick-and-pack shift — is that normal?
Yes, within limits. The DS8178 housing traps heat from two sustained draws — the wireless radio polling the network continuously and the imager firing on every trigger pull. After several hours of high-frequency scanning in a confined space, the pack and housing will be warm to the touch. That's expected operating behaviour, not a cell fault. If the scanner becomes hot enough to be uncomfortable or shuts down, check that the battery contacts are clean and the pack is seating fully — a high-resistance connection forces the cell to work harder and generates excess heat.
