MeiZu Meilan U20 — 3.85V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (BU15)
This is a 3.85V, 3200mAh lithium-polymer replacement battery for the MeiZu Meilan U20 and Meilan U20 Dual SIM. Part number BU15. It fits both single and dual SIM variants of the U20, which share the same battery bay geometry and connector orientation.
- Meilan U20 and U20 Dual SIM compatibility: Both U20 variants use the same physical cell format, contact pin layout, and BMS handshake protocol. The same BU15 battery services both boards without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through full charge cycles on a Meilan U20 board. The BMS accepted the cell without fault codes, and the charge IC communicated correctly across all charge states from 3.0V recovery up to 4.35V cutoff.
- First-cycle fuel gauge recalibration: On first use after installation, disable fast charging and run one complete discharge-charge cycle at standard rate. This lets the fuel gauge IC map the new cell's discharge curve before high-current charging pushes current into an uncalibrated state.
Sudden shutdown at 20–30% on the Meilan U20 after a cell swap
The Meilan U20's fuel gauge IC holds a discharge curve built from the old cell's behaviour. A new cell has a different internal resistance profile, so the IC miscalculates remaining capacity. Under modem transmission or screen-brightness load, voltage sags faster than the IC expects, triggering a low-voltage shutdown before the display reaches 0%. One full discharge-charge cycle at standard current recalibrates the coulomb counter and eliminates the premature cutoff.
Device not powering on after the BU15 sat in storage
Lithium-polymer cells self-discharge in storage. If the BU15 dropped below 2.5V per cell, the BMS enters lockout mode and the phone will not respond to a normal charger. Connect the phone to a low-current USB source — a PC port or a 5V 500mA adapter — and leave it for 20–30 minutes without pressing the power button. The BMS recovery circuit needs sustained low current to exit lockout before the charge IC hands off to standard charge mode. Once the phone vibrates or the LED activates, normal charging can resume.

My Meilan U20 keeps shutting off at around 25% battery — why does this happen with a brand-new cell?
The fuel gauge IC on the U20 is still calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve. When load spikes — modem activity, screen brightness — voltage drops faster than the IC predicts, so it triggers a shutdown before the display hits zero. Run one full discharge down to automatic power-off, then charge uninterrupted to 100% at standard rate. After that single cycle the coulomb counter recalibrates and the premature shutdowns stop.
The battery percentage on my U20 jumps erratically after fitting the BU15 — sometimes it gains 10% just sitting idle.
Erratic percentage readings after a cell swap mean the fuel gauge IC is still interpolating against the previous cell's stored impedance data. The new BU15 cell has a different internal resistance profile, so the IC makes poor estimates between reference points. Avoid partial top-ups for the first two cycles — let the phone discharge fully and recharge fully each time. By the second complete cycle the IC has enough real data to track the new cell accurately.
Fast charging stopped working on my Meilan U20 right after I replaced the battery — the phone only charges slowly now.
On the first charge cycle after a cell swap, the U20's charge IC defaults to a cautious constant-current profile while it verifies the new cell's response. The proprietary fast-charge handshake between the adapter and the BMS will not fully engage until the IC has completed one baseline cycle and confirmed cell behaviour is within expected parameters. Charge to 100% once at standard rate using the original MeiZu adapter, then disconnect and reconnect — fast charging should re-engage on the second session.
