Fits Symbol SPT-1500 and SPT-1550 scanners, replaces OEM part 21-42921-01 and BTRY-MC90SAB00-01.
2.4V and 700mAh Ni-MH chemistry delivers sufficient current for continuous barcode scanning and wireless transmission during typical warehouse shifts.
Connector slides straight into the battery slot with no keying; locking tab seats flush when fully inserted into the scanner housing.
We bench-tested this cell across five full charge cycles in a Symbol cradle — BMS accepted current without fault codes, voltage held steady under scan-trigger load.
After installing, place the scanner in its cradle for one complete charge cycle before using in the field — scan trigger inrush is highest when the cell sits near minimum and a fully charged pack prevents false BMS trips on first shift.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Symbol SPT-1500 / SPT-1550 — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (21-42921-01)

This is a 2.4V, 700mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Symbol SPT-1500 and SPT-1550 handheld barcode scanners. It replaces OEM part numbers 21-42921-01 and BTRY-MC90SAB00-01. If your scanner is cutting out mid-shift or failing to hold a charge, this pack is the direct swap.

  • SPT-1500 and SPT-1550 compatibility: Both models run the same 2.4V battery rail, use the same physical housing dimensions, and share the same BMS handshake protocol — one part number covers both. No adapter or firmware change needed.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through repeated scan-burst sequences and monitored BMS cutoff thresholds. The cell held within expected voltage tolerance under combined laser trigger and radio transmission draw.
  • First-shift prep for pick-and-pack operations: After installing, seat the scanner in its charging cradle for a full charge cycle before using it on the floor. Scan trigger inrush current is at its highest when the cell is near minimum — a fully charged cell prevents false BMS trips during the opening burst of a busy shift.

Cradle showing a charging error on a freshly installed pack

A charging error on a new pack is almost always a contact resistance issue, not a fault with the battery itself. Ni-MH cells can arrive with a surface oxide layer on the terminals that raises resistance enough to trigger the dock's error state. Wipe the gold contacts on both the battery pack and the cradle slot with a dry cloth, then reseat the pack firmly until it clicks. If the error clears, the dock is reading the pack correctly and the charge cycle will proceed normally.

Scanner drops wireless connection during rapid back-to-back scanning

The SPT-1500 fires both the scan laser and the wireless radio in close succession during fast barcode sequences. At low cell charge, the combined inrush from both draws can pull the pack voltage below the BMS protection floor, causing a momentary shutdown that the scanner reports as a connection drop. This is not a radio fault — it is a voltage sag event. Recharge the pack to full before a high-frequency scanning session and the drops will stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

My SPT-1500 scanner stopped reading barcodes right after I put the new battery in — what's wrong?

The laser in the SPT-1500 needs the cell above a minimum voltage threshold to fire at full power — a new Ni-MH pack fresh from the box often sits below that level. Place the scanner in its cradle and charge the pack fully before attempting to scan. Once the cell reaches its rated 2.4V, the laser will fire normally and barcodes will read without issue.

The scanner feels noticeably warm after a long shift — is that a battery problem?

In the SPT-1550's enclosed housing, heat builds from sustained laser trigger draw combined with continuous wireless polling — both pulling from the same small 700mAh cell. This is normal under heavy use and does not indicate a faulty pack. If the case is hot enough to be uncomfortable, reduce continuous scan bursts and allow the scanner to sit in the cradle for 10–15 minutes mid-shift to dissipate heat.

This replacement isn't lasting as long per shift as the original battery did when it was new — why?

Ni-MH cells are sensitive to shallow cycling — if the previous pack was repeatedly topped off after light use rather than run through full discharge-to-charge cycles, the replacement may appear weaker until it is conditioned. Run two or three full discharge-and-charge cycles through the cradle: use the scanner until the low-battery indicator trips, then charge uninterrupted to completion. After conditioning, capacity should stabilise at the rated 700mAh.
