Talk time shorter than expected after the swap
Short talk time in the first few cycles after a NiMH swap is a chemistry issue, not a defective pack. NiMH cells need three to five full charge-discharge cycles before they reach rated capacity — 300mAh in this case. Each cycle, the pack holds a little more charge than the last. Run the handset down until the low-battery alert sounds, then return it to the base for a full charge, and repeat this for at least three cycles before judging talk time.

Range dropped noticeably right after fitting the new battery — is the battery causing it?
Yes — a new NiMH pack that hasn't completed its first full charge will sag in voltage under the RF transmit load, and the handset's radio pulls back its output to compensate.
