This is a 3.6V, 1200mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for the Bang & Olufsen Beocom 5000 cordless telephone handset. It replaces part number B3161 directly. When the original pack no longer holds charge, this restores the handset to full working condition.

  • Beocom 5000 handset fit: The Beocom 5000 handset uses a 3.6V Ni-MH cell pack at this exact footprint — 15 × 45 × 53mm. The connector orientation and cell arrangement match the OEM spec, so the base station charges the pack through the same contact points without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on a Beocom 5000 base station. The base accepted the battery immediately, the charge indicator activated normally, and the BMS held voltage within expected Ni-MH discharge curves across all test cycles.
  • First charge on NiMH cordless packs: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. Ni-MH cells shipped in storage state need a slow initial charge to reach rated 1200mAh capacity — a short first charge will leave the pack underformed and talk time will disappoint.

Ni-MH batteries lose voltage during storage. If a pack sits in a warehouse for several months, its resting voltage can drop low enough that the Beocom 5000 base station does not recognise it as a valid battery and refuses to start charging. This is a threshold issue, not a fault with the battery or the base. Place the handset in the base for at least 30 minutes — most base stations will eventually trickle-charge a deeply discharged Ni-MH pack back above the acceptance threshold and then switch to normal charge mode.

Talk time shorter than the original battery after replacement

A new Ni-MH pack almost never delivers rated capacity on the first cycle — this is normal cell chemistry, not a defective battery. Ni-MH cells require between three and five full charge-discharge cycles to reach their rated 1200mAh. Each cycle, available capacity increases until the pack is fully conditioned. Run the handset down to low battery warning, return it to the base for a full charge, and repeat — by cycle four or five, talk time will match the rated spec.

The Beocom 5000 base station won't start charging the new battery — the charge light never comes on. What's wrong?

This happens when a Ni-MH pack arrives from storage with a voltage low enough that the base station doesn't recognise it as a valid cell. The base has a minimum acceptance threshold, and a deeply discharged pack can sit just below it. Leave the handset seated in the base for 30–60 minutes — the base will typically initiate a trickle charge, bring the pack above the threshold, then switch to normal charge mode. If the light still doesn't activate after an hour, check that the handset contacts are clean and fully seated.

My Beocom 5000 handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I get it back?

Removing the battery cuts all power to the handset, and some DECT cordless phones clear their pairing data when power is fully lost. The Beocom 5000 uses a standard DECT registration process to re-pair. Hold the handset's paging or find button on the base unit until the handset enters registration mode, then follow the on-screen prompts on the handset to re-register. Once paired, place the handset back in the base for a full 16-hour charge before use.

The Beocom 5000 handset drains completely overnight even when it's sitting in the base — is the battery faulty?

This points to a seating issue, not a faulty battery. If the handset isn't fully pressed into the base cradle, the charging contacts don't make proper connection and the handset runs entirely on battery in standby. Check that the handset clicks firmly into the base and that the charge indicator light is active. If the cradle contacts look oxidised or dirty, wipe them with a dry cloth. A fully seated handset on a working base should hold charge overnight with no measurable drain.
