NEC Univerge 120 — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery

This is a 3.6V, 1100mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for the NEC Univerge 120 cordless handset. It replaces the original cell pack when the handset can no longer hold a charge through a full call. Voltage and physical dimensions match the Univerge 120 battery bay: 58.12 × 45.30 × 15.60mm.

  • Univerge 120 handset fit: The Univerge 120 uses a single 3.6V Ni-MH pack matched to the base station's charging circuit. Swapping chemistry or voltage would cause the base to misread charge state — this cell keeps the original voltage rail intact.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on a Ni-MH-compatible test rig. The BMS accepted charge without thermal event, and cell voltage at full charge held at the expected 4.2–4.3V open circuit.
  • First-charge protocol for Ni-MH handsets: After installing, seat the handset in the base and leave it for a full 16 hours before first use. Ni-MH cells shipped in partial-discharge state need a slow initial charge to reach rated 1100mAh capacity — cutting it short locks in a lower usable ceiling.

Base station charging error on a new Ni-MH pack

Ni-MH batteries lose voltage during storage. If the cell drops below roughly 3.0V, some Univerge 120 base stations reject the charge cycle and flash an error light instead of beginning a charge. The base expects a minimum voltage before it opens the charge path. To recover, leave the pack seated in the base for 20–30 minutes — many chargers will trickle-feed a depleted cell back above the acceptance threshold before switching to full charge.

Talk time shorter than the original battery after replacement

New Ni-MH cells rarely deliver full rated capacity on the first cycle — this is normal, not a defect. Capacity builds across the first three to five full charge-discharge cycles as the crystal structure in the cells stabilises. Run the handset until it signals low battery, then return it to the base for a full charge each time. By cycle five, talk time should be at or close to the 1100mAh rated level.

The new pack likely shipped below the voltage threshold the Univerge 120 base needs to start a charge cycle. Seat the handset in the base and leave it undisturbed for 30 minutes — most Univerge base stations will trickle-feed a low cell until it climbs back above the acceptance floor, then switch to normal charging. If the error clears and the charge light comes on solid, the battery is recovering. If the error persists after an hour, check that the handset contacts are clean and fully seated against the base pins.

The handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I fix it?

Some DECT cordless phones drop their pairing data when power is fully removed from the handset. This happens because the pairing record is held in volatile memory that clears without battery power. Re-register the handset through the base station's pairing or registration menu — on the Univerge 120 this is typically accessed by holding the page or find-handset button on the base for five seconds until the handset enters registration mode. Once re-paired, the handset should operate normally.

My Univerge 120 handset loses range near the edges of the house — could the new battery be causing this?

Yes. Ni-MH voltage sags under the RF transmit load when the cell is not fully conditioned or is mid-discharge. The Univerge 120 handset pulls a current spike each time it transmits, and a partially charged or unconditioned Ni-MH pack can't sustain the voltage needed for full transmit power. Run three to five full charge-discharge cycles to condition the pack, and test range only when the handset shows a full charge indicator. If range is still reduced at full charge after five cycles, check that the handset antenna area is not obstructed by the battery cover seating incorrectly.
