Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

BH Bikes Rebel — 36V Li-ion Replacement Battery
This is a 36V 13,000mAh (468Wh) lithium-ion battery for the BH Bikes Rebel electric bike. It replaces the original pack on the Rebel's motor system, restoring pedal-assist and electric-only riding modes. Voltage and capacity match the Rebel's controller and charger specifications directly.
- BH Bikes Rebel platform fit: The Rebel runs a 36V electrical architecture throughout — motor controller, display, and charging circuit all operate on this voltage rail. Swapping to a different voltage pack triggers a controller fault. This battery stays within that 36V boundary.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through sustained motor-draw loads and monitored BMS response. The protection circuit held cutoff thresholds at low cell voltage and tripped correctly on over-current during simulated climb loads — no latching faults on reconnect.
- First charge after storage: If the pack has been sitting for several months, connect it to the Rebel's standard charger at room temperature and let it complete a full slow charge before riding. Cold or deeply discharged Li-ion cells have elevated internal resistance — pushing heavy motor current through them before that first charge cycle increases heat and shortens usable cell life.
Motor cutting out mid-hill on the BH Bikes Rebel with a new battery
Sustained climbing pulls significantly more current than flat riding — the Rebel's motor can spike well above its nominal draw on a steep gradient under a loaded rider. If the BMS detects that current exceeding its over-current threshold, it trips and cuts power to protect the cells. This is not a faulty battery; it is the protection circuit doing its job. Most BMS units on 36V e-bike packs reset automatically once current demand drops — stop pedalling for five seconds and the pack reconnects. If cutouts repeat on every moderate hill, check that the motor assist level is not set to maximum from a standing start, which generates the highest inrush current.
Charger not accepting the Rebel battery pack after winter storage
Standard e-bike chargers have a minimum acceptance voltage — typically around 30V for a 36V pack. If the battery has self-discharged below that threshold during months in storage, the charger's input circuit reads it as a fault condition and refuses to begin a charge cycle. Connect the charger anyway and leave it for 30 minutes without interrupting it. Many charger units trickle a small recovery current at around 0.1A before switching to full charge mode, which pulls the cell group voltage above the acceptance threshold. Once the charger LED shifts from fault to charging, the pack is recovering — let it complete the full cycle before riding.

Frequently Asked Questions
My BH Bikes Rebel motor stutters and loses power on steep inclines even with a full battery — what's happening?
This is voltage sag — under peak motor current on a climb, the cell group's internal resistance causes the pack voltage to drop sharply, even from a full state of charge. The motor controller sees that voltage dip and reduces output to stay within its operating window, which reads as stuttering or power loss. It is more pronounced with a worn original pack but can also appear with a new battery on aggressive terrain. Drop the assist level one step before the climb to reduce peak current draw and keep voltage above the controller's sag threshold.
The BH Bikes Rebel shows a full charge on the display but range drops significantly in cold weather — is the battery faulty?
No — this is normal Li-ion behaviour. Below 5°C, lithium-ion cells lose 15–25% of their usable capacity because ion movement through the electrolyte slows at low temperatures. The display reads state of charge based on resting voltage, which does not reflect the cold-reduced capacity until you start drawing current. Store the battery indoors the night before a cold ride and fit it to the bike just before you leave — a cell at 18°C retains close to its rated 468Wh where the same cell at 2°C does not.
The BH Bikes Rebel battery charged overnight but the display reads around 80% and won't go higher — what causes that?
This usually means the cell group voltages within the pack are unbalanced — one or more cell groups hit the upper cutoff early while others are still below full charge, so the BMS stops the charge cycle short. It is common after deep discharge or long storage. Run two to three full charge-to-ride-to-empty cycles at room temperature to let the BMS balancer correct the spread across cell groups. After those cycles, a full charge should read at or close to 42V measured at the pack's output terminals.
