Fits Samsung SPH-A820, SPH-A840, and PM-A840 flip phones using original Samsung battery connector.
3.7V lithium-ion cell rated 750mAh—supplies enough capacity for a full day of calls and texts on these devices.
Connector slides straight into the battery slot with a single locking tab on the left side of the phone chassis.
We ran the cell through three full charge-discharge cycles on a Sprint-era charger; BMS settled within normal parameters by cycle two.
On first power-up after installation, run one complete discharge-to-shutdown and full recharge without removing the battery—the fuel gauge IC needs to map this new cell's discharge curve before the phone reports accurate percentage.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Samsung SPH-A820 / SPH-A840 / PM-A840 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This is a 3.7V, 750mAh (2.78Wh) Li-ion replacement battery for the Samsung SPH-A820, SPH-A840, and PM-A840 flip phones. These handsets launched on Sprint's early 2000s network and share a common battery form factor across the three model numbers. If the original cell no longer holds a charge, this unit restores the phone to normal operating condition.

  • SPH-A820, SPH-A840, and PM-A840 compatibility: All three models share the same battery bay dimensions (65.84 × 41.75 × 7.35mm), voltage rail, and connector pinout. One battery fits all three without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on compatible hardware. The BMS held the charge cutoff correctly at 4.2V and the low-voltage protection tripped at the expected threshold, with no thermal event during the charge phase.
  • Fuel gauge recalibration on first use: After installing this cell, run one full discharge-to-charge cycle before relying on the battery percentage indicator. The phone's fuel gauge IC is calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve. Without a full cycle, the percentage reading will be inaccurate and the phone may shut down at an unexpected charge level.

Why the SPH-A820 shuts down suddenly at 20–30% after a battery swap

This happens because the phone's fuel gauge IC still tracks the discharge curve of the old, degraded cell. When the new cell hits a voltage point the gauge associates with 20–30% on the old curve, the phone interprets it as a critical low and triggers a protective shutdown. The actual cell still has capacity — the gauge just doesn't know it yet. One complete discharge cycle, letting the phone run down to automatic shutdown and then charging uninterrupted to 100%, resets the coulomb counter against the new cell's real curve.

Phone not powering on after the replacement battery sat in storage

Li-ion cells self-discharge in storage. If this battery dropped below approximately 2.5V per cell before installation, the BMS will have entered a deep-discharge lockout state and the phone will show no response when you press the power button. Connect the phone to a charger and leave it for 20–30 minutes without pressing anything — the charge IC needs to push a low recovery current into the cell before the BMS will re-initialise. Once the BMS releases lockout, the charging indicator will appear. If the screen stays blank past 45 minutes on charge, check that the charger is outputting at least 5V.

Frequently Asked Questions

The battery percentage on my SPH-A820 is jumping around erratically after I put in the new battery — is the replacement faulty?

The replacement cell is almost certainly fine. The fuel gauge IC in the phone was calibrated to the discharge curve of your old cell, and it is now reading a curve it doesn't recognise. This causes the percentage to skip or bounce as the gauge tries to map unfamiliar voltage data. Run one full uninterrupted discharge down to automatic shutdown, then charge straight to 100% without interruption — the coulomb counter will recalibrate against the new cell and the percentage should stabilise.

My SPH-A840 feels warm near the battery while charging with the new cell installed — should I be concerned?

Some warmth during the first few charge cycles on a new cell is normal. A fresh Li-ion cell has higher internal impedance than a broken-in one, which means the charge IC dissipates slightly more energy as heat during the constant-current phase. If the phone is uncomfortable to hold or the warmth persists past the first two or three cycles, verify your charger is outputting a stable 5V and is not a high-current fast charger. After the first few cycles, impedance drops and the heat will reduce noticeably.

The SPH-A820 won't turn on at all even though I just installed the new battery — what do I check first?

The most likely cause is BMS lockout from deep discharge during storage. Connect the phone to a charger and leave it completely undisturbed for at least 20–30 minutes — the charge IC needs time to deliver a low-current trickle before the BMS will re-initialise and allow normal operation. Do not press the power button during this window, as some charge ICs reset their recovery timer on any input. If there is still no response after 45 minutes, confirm the charger is delivering at least 5V DC at the connector.
