Lithium-polymer cells self-discharge during storage. The phone feels warm near the back where the battery sits during the first few charges after fitting — should I be concerned?
A new high-impedance cell generates slightly more heat than a broken-in one during the initial charge cycles, because the internal resistance is higher before the cell's electrolyte fully wets the electrode surfaces. This is normal for the first two to three charges. The heat should be mild — warm to the touch, not hot. If the device becomes uncomfortably hot or shows a temperature warning, stop charging immediately, remove the case if one is fitted, and charge at room temperature using a 5V 1A wall adapter rather than a fast charger until the cell has completed its first full cycle.
