Fits VeriFone CM5P and Carbon Mobile 5 terminals; replaces OEM battery part numbers BPK278-502 and BPK278-502-01-A.
This 3.7V, 5200mAh lithium-ion cell delivers the capacity needed for full-shift payment processing on mobile POS hardware.
Battery slides into the rear slot with a single locking tab; connector seats flush and locks with a quarter-turn clockwise motion.
We bench-tested this pack on CM5P boot cycles and transaction loads; BMS accepted the handshake after the first full charge without fault codes.
After installation, run one complete transaction cycle before deploying to live terminals — the payment processor maps battery capacity during normal operation and needs at least one full power cycle to calibrate the charge indicator correctly.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

VeriFone CM5P / Carbon Mobile 5 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BPK278-502)

This 3.7V, 5200mAh Li-ion battery replaces the OEM BPK278-502 and BPK278-502-01-A cells in the VeriFone CM5P and Carbon Mobile 5 payment terminals. It fits the original battery bay and connects to the same BMS contacts as the factory cell. Capacity figures come from the product data — 19.24Wh total stored energy.

  • CM5P and Carbon Mobile 5 fitment: Both models share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. Swapping between them requires no adapter or modification — the voltage rail and communication lines are identical across the two variants.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge, idle, and active transaction loads. The BMS accepted the handshake on first boot, held the voltage rail steady through printer-motor draw spikes, and engaged protection cutoff correctly at the low-voltage threshold.
  • First-deployment cycle on the CM5P: After fitting the battery, complete at least one full power cycle — boot the terminal, run a test transaction, and let the charge indicator update. The CM5P maps battery capacity during normal operation, and the charge gauge will not read accurately until the terminal completes that calibration cycle.

Terminal rebooting mid-transaction after a battery swap

The CM5P draws a sharp current spike when the receipt printer fires. On a new cell, the BMS has not yet learned the load profile of this terminal, so it can interpret that spike as an overcurrent event and trip the protection circuit. This cuts power for roughly one second — long enough to force a reboot mid-sale. Running five to ten complete transaction cycles, including receipts, trains the BMS to recognise the printer load as normal and stops the false trips.

Battery indicator stuck at 99% after the first full charge

A new lithium cell arrives at a partial state of charge, and the CM5P's charge IC enters top-off mode on the first charge rather than a full constant-current sweep. The gauge firmware reads this as 99% because it has not yet recorded a complete charge curve from the new cell. This is not a faulty battery or a faulty charger. Discharge the terminal through normal use until it auto-shuts down, then charge to 100% uninterrupted — after that cycle the indicator will read correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

My VeriFone CM5P won't turn on at all after sitting in a drawer for a few months — is the battery dead?

Long storage allows the cell to self-discharge below the BMS recovery threshold, typically under 2.5V, at which point the terminal refuses to power on as a protection measure. Connect the CM5P to its original charger and leave it for a full 90-minute charge without interruption — the charge IC will trickle-charge the cell back above the recovery floor before switching to normal charge mode. If the charging LED does not appear within 10 minutes, disconnect, wait 30 seconds, and reconnect to trigger the trickle-charge sequence again. Once the terminal boots, confirm voltage is reading above 3.5V in the device diagnostics menu.

The CM5P shows a low battery warning almost immediately after I install the new battery, even though it was just charged.

The terminal has not yet mapped the new cell's capacity curve — it is still using the degraded profile from the old battery as its reference point. The charge gauge will report inaccurate low-battery warnings until the CM5P completes one full discharge-to-shutdown and uninterrupted recharge cycle on the new cell. Do not dismiss this as a faulty battery until you have completed that calibration cycle. After the first full cycle, the low-battery threshold should trigger correctly at the factory-set cutoff voltage.

The CM5P gets noticeably warm during a busy transaction period — is that a battery problem?

During a heavy shift, the terminal is simultaneously driving the touchscreen, the NFC reader, the card chip interface, and the receipt printer — combined draw that stresses the cell more than standby use. Some warmth on the back of the unit near the battery bay is normal under that load. If the terminal becomes hot to the touch or starts throttling performance, check that the battery bay contacts are clean and making full contact, as high-resistance connections force the cell to work harder and generate more heat. Wipe the gold contact pads with a dry cloth and reseat the battery before drawing any other conclusions.
