This is a 3V lithium-manganese dioxide cell rated at 1750mAh (5.25Wh), sized to fit GE Fanuc 30i, 31i, 32i, and 35i-B CNC control systems. It maintains SRAM and real-time clock backup when main power is disconnected. Without a functional cell, the controller loses program data, tool offsets, and timing information on the next power cycle.

PLC battery alarm not clearing after a confirmed good installation

Fanuc 30i-series controllers do not auto-clear the battery alarm when a new cell is seated. The alarm flag is written to a specific PMC data address and stays active until cleared manually in the programming software. Navigate to the PMC maintenance screen, locate the battery alarm status bit, and reset it while the controller is powered on. Skipping this step leaves the alarm active even though the cell is good and the SRAM is protected.

New cell reading below 3V on the controller's diagnostic screen

Li-MnO2 cells ship at a storage voltage, typically 2.80–2.95V, to slow self-discharge during transit. Once seated, the controller's float-charge circuit brings the cell up to its nominal 3V within a few hours under normal operating conditions. A reading below 3V immediately after installation is not a fault. Check the diagnostic screen again after the machine has been running for two to four hours — the voltage should read at or above 3.0V before the next scheduled shutdown.

The clock and date on the Fanuc 30i reset to a default value after I replaced the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The real-time clock on the 30i-series loses sync any time the backup cell is interrupted, even briefly, during a power-off swap. The controller does not re-sync the RTC automatically. Go into the system settings screen on the Fanuc operator panel, navigate to the date/time parameter, and set it manually. If your facility logs machine cycles by timestamp, verify the RTC is correct before the machine re-enters production.

If the control cabinet runs warm — common in machine tools with servo drives nearby — a cell that would last three years in a cool enclosure may deplete in 18 months or less. Check the enclosure temperature at the battery location with a contact thermometer. If it reads above 40°C consistently, shorten your replacement interval to match and consider improving cabinet ventilation to bring the ambient temperature down.
