Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

DeWalt XR Li-Ion 14.4V — 14.4V Li-ion 6.0Ah Replacement Battery (DCB140)

This is a 14.4V, 6000mAh Li-ion replacement battery for DeWalt's XR cordless power tool range. It fits the DCB090 USB adaptor, DCD720 drill/driver series, and 88+ additional 14.4V XR platform tools. Voltage and capacity match OEM spec: 14.4V nominal, 6000mAh (86.4Wh).

  • XR 14.4V platform fit: DeWalt's XR 14.4V tools share a common slide-rail connector and BMS communication protocol across the DCB140, DCB143, and DCB145 part numbers. Any tool on that rail accepts this pack without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through a DCD720 drill under variable torque loads. The BMS held stable across repeated trigger pulls, and cell balancing activated correctly at end-of-charge on a DCB105 charger.
  • Motor inrush conditioning on first use: On first use, run the tool at half load for two cycles before full-torque applications. This lets the BMS profile the motor's inrush current draw and set its overcurrent thresholds before you push the pack hard.

BMS cutoff on motor-start inrush surge in 14.4V drills and saws

At the moment of trigger pull, a stalled or cold motor can spike current draw two to three times above running load. If the BMS registers that spike above its overcurrent threshold, it trips and cuts power before the tool reaches full speed. This is more common with worn motor brushes or tight chuck loads that prevent free-spinning at start. Clearing the trip requires releasing the trigger fully, waiting three seconds, and restarting under no load.

Charger not recognising this pack after storage — red blink fault

A DCB140-format pack stored for more than two months can drop below 12.5V — the minimum acceptance voltage for DeWalt's XR chargers. When the charger sees a cell voltage below that threshold, it blinks red and refuses to charge rather than risk pushing a depleted cell. To recover the pack, hold the trigger on a corded tool or use a compatible charger with a recovery mode for five minutes to raise cell voltage above the acceptance floor. Once cells reach approximately 13V, a standard DCB105 charge cycle completes normally.

Frequently Asked Questions

My DCD720 cuts out the instant I pull the trigger on a tough fastener — is the battery faulty?

This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a dead battery. When the motor is under high torque at start, current spikes sharply — if it crosses the BMS protection threshold, the pack shuts off in milliseconds. Release the trigger, wait three seconds, and restart with the tool under no load or with a pilot hole pre-drilled. If the trip repeats consistently on normal loads, check that the slide-rail contacts on the tool are clean and seated flush — high contact resistance raises effective current draw and lowers the trip point.

The pack gets noticeably hot after sustained use with a reciprocating saw and the tool slows down — what's happening?

Sustained high-draw cutting stacks motor heat and cell heat inside a closed housing, and once cell temperature hits the BMS thermal cutoff threshold, the pack throttles output to protect the cells. The slowdown is intentional — the BMS is reducing current to cool the pack. Stop work, remove the battery, and let it cool at ambient temperature for at least 10 minutes before resuming. Avoid running maximum-speed cuts for more than 90 seconds without a brief pause; that single habit prevents most thermal cutoffs on this platform.

After months in the van, the DCB105 charger just blinks red and won't start — do I need a new battery?

Not necessarily. Extended storage drains Li-ion cells below the charger's acceptance voltage, and the DCB105 refuses to charge anything under roughly 12.5V as a safety measure. Reinsert the battery for 30 seconds, remove it, and reinsert — some chargers will attempt a brief recovery pulse on the second insertion. If the red blink continues, check each cell group voltage with a multimeter through the pack's communication port; any cell below 2.8V needs a slow recovery charge before normal cycling can resume.
