Why the iPad 3 shuts down at 15–25% remaining after a battery swap

The iPad 3 draws a combined load from the Retina display and Wi-Fi radio that spikes current well above standby draw. A new cell whose fuel gauge hasn't been recalibrated will show an inflated state-of-charge. When actual cell voltage drops under that combined load, the BMS hits its cutoff before the OS-reported percentage reaches zero. iPad 3 percentage dropping faster than expected from 100% after replacement

This is fuel gauge drift — the IC is still using the discharge curve from the old, degraded cell. The new cell has a different voltage-to-capacity relationship, and the gauge hasn't learned it yet. It reads voltage, converts it to a percentage using stale calibration data, and the numbers fall faster than actual capacity warrants. Fast charging stopped working after I swapped the battery on my iPad 3 — what happened?

The iPad 3 charge controller needs one accepted charge cycle before it fully negotiates with a new cell. Plug into the original Apple 12W adapter — not a third-party charger — and let it complete a full charge from low without interrupting it. USB-PD negotiation and charge-rate acceptance typically normalise after that first complete cycle. If the charge rate is still slow after that, check the Lightning port for debris affecting the charge IC signal.

My iPad 3 feels warm while charging after fitting the new battery — should I be concerned?

Mild warmth during the first few charge cycles is normal. The charge IC on a new cell draws slightly higher current initially as it characterises the cell's internal resistance. We measured surface temperature on the bench and it stayed within normal operating range throughout. If the device becomes hot to the touch or shows a temperature warning on screen, disconnect it immediately and check that the battery connector is fully seated with no pinched flex cables.
