Why the Aspire S5-391 reports poor battery health immediately after a cell swap

The S5-391 BIOS reads battery health data stored in the old cell's EEPROM and caches it. When a new cell is installed, that cached data does not match the new cell's charge profile, triggering a false "poor health" or "unknown battery" flag. This is not a fault with the replacement cell — it is a calibration state. Running one full discharge-to-hibernate cycle followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% forces the BIOS to rewrite its battery learn data against the new cell. After one or two cycles, the health indicator normalises.

This happens when the fuel gauge IC's charge map is still calibrated to the old, degraded cell. The IC predicts remaining capacity using a curve built from cycles on the previous battery, so the percentage shown does not reflect actual cell voltage. Under combined CPU and display load, the cell hits its real voltage floor before the gauge reaches 0%, and the system cuts power to protect itself. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate-cutoff cycles, charging fully between each, to force the fuel gauge IC to rebuild its map against the new 14.8V cell. After recalibration, shutdown should not occur above approximately 3.0V per cell.

No. The Wh figure displayed in BIOS is read from the EEPROM on the new cell, and that value can differ slightly from what Windows or the old cell reported due to how manufacturers rate nominal versus actual capacity. The cell itself is not faulty — the 34.04Wh rating is accurate to the chemistry. If the figure concerns you, run one full discharge-to-hibernate cycle and recheck; the BIOS learn cycle will often correct the displayed value on the next full charge.

My Aspire S5-391 fuel gauge is jumping around wildly — showing 60%, then 85%, then 45% within minutes of unplugging.

The fuel gauge IC on the S5-391 uses a charge map built from cycles on the previous cell. A new cell with a different impedance and capacity curve causes the IC to misread state-of-charge, producing erratic percentage jumps. This settles after two to three full calibration cycles. Discharge fully to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100% each time — do not interrupt mid-charge during calibration runs. New battery installed but the Aspire S5-391 still won't charge above 80% — is BIOS limiting it?

Yes, this is almost certainly the Acer Battery Care or BIOS charge-limit setting, not a fault with the replacement cell. The S5-391 BIOS and Acer Power Management software include a charge ceiling option that caps charging at 80% to reduce long-term cell stress. Open Acer Care Center or check BIOS under the Power menu and set the charge limit to 100%. Once disabled, the cell will charge to its full 14.8V terminal voltage.
