Fits Apple iPOD Shuffle 3rd Generation, replaces OEM part 616-0429.
3.7V, 73mAh Li-Polymer cell delivers power for full playback cycles on this compact clip player.
Connector seats flat into the battery slot with no locking tab; orientation is fixed by housing geometry.
We bench-tested this pack on a third-generation Shuffle; BMS accepted charge immediately without pre-conditioning or fault states.
After installation, connect the charger and wait 30 minutes before powering on—this device enters deep discharge protection after storage and needs a slow trickle phase to accept normal current.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Apple iPod Shuffle 3rd Generation — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (616-0429)

This is a 3.7V, 73mAh Li-Polymer replacement battery for the Apple iPod Shuffle 3rd Generation. It fits the clip-based Shuffle — the model without a screen, controlled by the inline remote on the headphone cable. The OEM part number is 616-0429.

  • 3rd Generation Shuffle fit: The 3rd Gen Shuffle uses a smaller cell format than the 2nd or 4th Gen. The 616-0429 matches the correct cell dimensions (26.19 × 13.79 × 3.49mm) and connector orientation. Swapping a cell from a different generation will not fit the board correctly.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on a 3rd Gen Shuffle. The BMS accepted charge current without fault flags. Voltage held steady across playback load and tapered cleanly into the low-voltage cutoff threshold.
  • Post-swap charge behaviour: After installing a new cell, plug the Shuffle into iTunes via USB rather than a wall adapter first. The 3rd Gen Shuffle relies on the USB host for its initial charge handshake — a wall adapter alone may not start current flow on a freshly installed cell.

Why the iPod Shuffle 3rd Gen goes dark after weeks in a drawer

At 73mAh, this cell has very little reserve capacity. Stored without a charge for more than a few weeks, the cell voltage can drop below the BMS protection threshold — typically around 2.5V. When that happens, the Shuffle will not respond to the power button at all. Connect it to a powered USB port and leave it for 30 to 45 minutes before attempting to power on. The BMS needs a trickle current to recover the cell voltage above the wake threshold before it will pass normal charge current.

Playback cutting out before the status light shows low battery

This happens because the audio amplifier in the Shuffle draws a short current spike when driving headphones, and near the end of discharge the cell voltage sags under that load. The BMS reads the sag as a cutoff condition and shuts down before the indicator registers empty. It is not a faulty cell — it is the cell reaching its usable floor. After a full charge cycle, the behaviour resets. If cutouts start much earlier than expected after a new cell install, verify the solder joints on the battery connector tabs are not adding resistance to the circuit.

Frequently Asked Questions

My iPod Shuffle 3rd Gen won't turn on at all after sitting unused for a few months — is the new battery dead?

Almost certainly not dead — the cell has dropped below the BMS protection floor from self-discharge. At 73mAh, there is almost no reserve to hold voltage during long storage. Plug the Shuffle into a powered USB port on a computer and leave it connected for 30 to 45 minutes without pressing anything. Once the BMS sees voltage recover above roughly 2.8V, it will allow normal charging to resume and the device will respond again.

The battery percentage on my Shuffle jumps around erratically right after fitting this replacement cell — what's wrong?

Nothing is wrong with the cell. The Shuffle's voltage-threshold indicator needs a full charge and at least one complete discharge cycle to recalibrate against the new cell's discharge curve. The old cell's curve was baked into the device's reference state, and the new cell reads differently at first. Run two full charge-to-cutoff cycles and the readings will stabilise. Do not interrupt those cycles partway through.

Playback cuts out suddenly even though the Shuffle's status light still shows green — is the cell faulty?

This is voltage sag, not a faulty cell. Near the end of discharge, the audio amplifier pulls a brief current spike that drops cell voltage below the BMS cutoff threshold, even though the indicator hasn't caught up yet. It is most noticeable with low-impedance headphones that draw more current. Charge the Shuffle fully and the issue resets. If cutouts happen within the first quarter of a charge, check that the battery connector is fully seated with no lifted solder joints adding resistance.
