Why the M50 BIOS reports poor battery health straight after a new cell install

Under combined CPU and display load, the reported percentage is wrong — the cell voltage is already at the low-cutoff cliff while Windows shows capacity remaining. Run a full discharge to hibernate, then a full uninterrupted charge to 100%, and repeat once more — the fuel gauge re-anchors to the new cell's actual voltage range, typically resolving at the 10.5V low-end cutoff.

Windows is showing this battery as 0% or "unknown" right after I installed it — is the cell dead?

The fuel gauge IC on the M50 platform is still reading EEPROM data from the old cell, so it has no valid reference point for the new chemistry. The cell itself is fine. Let the laptop discharge fully to hibernate, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without using it mid-charge. After one complete cycle, the OS reads the correct capacity — if it still shows 0%, check the BIOS battery page, which updates independently of Windows.

The battery info screen shows 48Wh but the spec says 73.26Wh — why is it reporting the wrong number?

The Wh figure in system info pulls from the EEPROM on the original cell's BMS, not from the replacement. Until the BIOS learn cycle runs against the new cell, it reports the last stored value. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate and full-charge cycles. After those cycles, the BIOS recalculates from actual cell voltage data and the reported Wh figure updates to reflect the 73.26Wh rating.

My M50 shuts down hard under load — browsing and watching video at the same time seems to trigger it

Combined CPU and display draw creates a load spike that exposes the voltage sag in a poorly calibrated fuel gauge reading. The cell voltage hits the low-cutoff threshold — around 9V under load — while the OS still shows 20–30% remaining, so the BMS cuts power without warning. This is a calibration issue, not a faulty cell. Do one full discharge to hibernate under moderate load, then charge to 100%, and the fuel gauge anchors correctly to the new cell's actual voltage floor.
