This is a 10.8V, 4400mAh (47.52Wh) Li-ion replacement battery for the Asus N46 series notebook. It fits the N46, N46V, N46VJ, and N46VM among other models in the same family. It replaces OEM part numbers A31-N56, A32-N56, and A33-N56.

  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on N46 hardware, confirmed the BMS communicates correctly with the EC, and verified the fuel gauge IC registers accurate state-of-charge data.
  • First-cycle conditioning on the N46: After installing, run one full discharge to hibernate-cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the false health warning the N46 EC logs after every cell swap.

Why the N46 BIOS flags a new battery as poor health immediately after installation

The N46 embedded controller reads EEPROM data stored on the old cell and compares it against the new one. A fresh cell has no charge history, so the EC interprets the mismatch as a degraded unit. This triggers the health warning before the battery has run a single cycle. One complete discharge-to-hibernate followed by a full uninterrupted charge gives the EC enough data to recalibrate and clear the flag.

N46 shutting down at 20–30% remaining after a battery swap

This happens because the fuel gauge IC still has calibration data from the old, worn cell. It maps the new cell's voltage curve incorrectly, so the remaining-charge estimate drops off a cliff under CPU and display load. The laptop hits what it thinks is 0% well before the cell is actually empty. Run two to three full discharge-to-hibernate cycles and the gauge IC will remap to the new cell's actual voltage curve — shutdowns should stop occurring above 10%.

My N46 shows the battery as 0% or "unknown" straight after fitting the new cell — is it dead already?

No — the N46 embedded controller is still reading EEPROM state from the previous cell and hasn't initialised against the new one. Plug in the charger and leave it connected for at least 30 minutes before drawing any conclusions. If the gauge still reads 0% after that, perform one full discharge to hibernate-cutoff and then charge uninterrupted to 100% to force the EC to run a fresh learn cycle.

Windows is showing this battery's capacity as noticeably less than 47.52Wh in the system report — why?

The Wh figure Windows reports pulls from the EEPROM-stored design capacity of the previous cell, not from a live measurement of the new one. Until the fuel gauge IC completes at least two full calibration cycles, the reported figure will reflect the old cell's worn-down rated value. After two full discharge-to-100% charge cycles, the reported Wh should align closely with the 47.52Wh spec.

The N46 cuts out under load — running a game or rendering — even though the battery indicator shows 50% or more charge remaining

This is a voltage sag issue. Under combined CPU, GPU, and display load, the cell must deliver a sustained current burst — if the fuel gauge IC is still miscalibrated from the old cell, it misreads the voltage drop as a near-empty state and triggers an emergency shutdown. It is not a fault with the cell itself. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate cycles to give the gauge IC accurate reference points, then retest under the same load conditions.
