Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

BlueBird Pidion BM-170 / BM-170 Semi-Rugged — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BAT-170L)
This is a 3.7V, 3300mAh Li-ion battery pack for the BlueBird Pidion BM-170 and BM-170 Semi-Rugged handheld mobile computers. It replaces OEM part BAT-170L and fits the same battery bay without modification. Voltage and capacity match the original specification exactly.
- BM-170 and BM-170 Semi-Rugged fit: Both models use the same 3.7V single-cell architecture and share the BAT-170L form factor, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol — one pack covers both variants.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through repeated scan-trigger and wireless polling loads. The BMS held voltage within spec across burst scanning sequences and did not false-trip on inrush from the imager or the radio module.
- First shift prep on the BM-170: After installing a new pack, seat the scanner in its cradle and run a full charge cycle before the first shift. The scan trigger draws its highest inrush current when the cell is near minimum — a fully charged cell prevents the BMS from cutting out on the very first pick-and-pack run.
Cradle showing a charging error on a new BAT-170L pack
A charging error on a new pack is almost always a contact resistance issue, not a pack fault. Dock contacts on heavily used cradles accumulate oxidation and debris that interrupt the charge handshake. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strips on both the pack and the cradle with a dry lint-free cloth, then reseat firmly. If the error clears, the pack is fine — the dock contacts just needed a clean surface to read the pack's thermistor signal correctly.
Scanner dropping wireless connection during rapid scan bursts
When the BM-170 fires the imager and transmits a scan result simultaneously, the combined inrush from the scan trigger and the wireless radio module spikes the draw on the cell. If the battery is aged or the cell voltage is already low, that spike causes a brief voltage sag that the wireless module interprets as a power loss — dropping the connection. This is not a radio fault. Keeping the pack charged above 30% during active pick-and-pack shifts eliminates the sag. A fresh BAT-170L cell holds voltage tighter under combined load, which is where you notice the difference versus a degraded original pack.

Frequently Asked Questions
My BM-170 stops reading barcodes immediately after I installed the new battery — did I get a faulty pack?
Almost certainly not a faulty pack. The imager needs a minimum supply voltage to fire, and a new pack straight out of packaging may sit below that threshold if it discharged during storage. Place the scanner in the cradle and charge it fully before first use. Once the cell reaches full charge, the imager will have the voltage headroom it needs and scanning will resume normally.
The cradle keeps flashing a charging error when I dock the new BAT-170L — what's causing it?
The cradle reads the pack's thermistor through the contact strip, and any oxidation or debris on those contacts breaks the handshake and triggers the error. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contacts on both the pack and the dock with a dry lint-free cloth, then reseat the scanner firmly. If the error clears after that, the pack is fine — it was a contact surface issue, not a battery fault.
The scanner gets noticeably warm after a few hours on the warehouse floor — is that normal?
Some warmth is expected. The BM-170 runs continuous wireless polling alongside repeated scan-trigger bursts inside an enclosed housing that doesn't dissipate heat quickly. What you're feeling is the combined thermal output of the radio module, imager, and processor — not the battery alone. If the housing becomes too hot to hold comfortably or the device shuts itself down, check that the ventilation slots on the unit aren't obstructed, and confirm the battery voltage under load isn't dropping below 3.4V, which would indicate a cell that needs replacement.
