Fits Chameleon RF WT2200 and RF WT2280 barcode scanners, replacing OEM part numbers 20-16228-07 and 20-16228-09.
3.6V 1800mAh lithium-ion cell delivers 6.48Wh — sufficient for full-shift scan and wireless polling cycles in retail and warehouse pick-and-pack operations.
Connector slides into the scanner battery slot with positive terminal forward; locking tab seats flush against the housing frame.
We bench-tested this cell in the WT2200 cradle through five full charge cycles; BMS accepted the handshake on first insertion with no fault codes.
After installing, place the scanner in its cradle for one complete charge cycle before using in pick-and-pack — the scan trigger inrush current is highest when the cell is near minimum and a pre-charged cell prevents false BMS cutoffs on the first shift.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Chameleon RF WT2200 / RF WT2280 — 3.6V Li-ion Replacement Battery (20-16228-07 / 20-16228-09)

This 3.6V 1800mAh Li-ion battery replaces the OEM pack in the Chameleon RF WT2200 and RF WT2280 handheld barcode scanners. Both models run on the same 3.6V single-cell architecture and share the same OEM part numbers: 20-16228-07 and 20-16228-09. Capacity is 1800mAh (6.48Wh) — matching the original specification.

  • WT2200 and WT2280 compatibility: Both scanner variants use identical battery bays, connector pinouts, and BMS handshake logic. The same cell fits both without modification or adapter — the voltage rail and communication lines are shared across the series.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through the WT2200's charge management circuit and confirmed the BMS accepted the cell without fault flags. Charge termination and over-discharge cutoff both triggered at expected thresholds.
  • First-shift preparation: After installing, seat the scanner in its charging cradle and run a full charge cycle before use on the floor. Scan trigger inrush current peaks when the cell is near its minimum voltage — a fully charged pack prevents false BMS trips during the first pick-and-pack shift.

Cradle showing a charging error on a new pack

A charging error on a freshly installed battery usually points to contact resistance between the pack terminals and the cradle's charging pins, not a fault with the cell itself. Oxidation or debris on either surface breaks the low-voltage handshake the cradle uses to begin the charge cycle. Wipe the battery contacts and cradle pins with a dry cloth, reseat the scanner firmly, and check that the pack is flush in the bay. The charge indicator should clear within 30 seconds of a clean connection.

Scanner losing wireless connection during rapid scan bursts

During a fast scan sequence, the WT2200 draws simultaneously from the wireless radio and the scan trigger — two inrush loads hitting the cell at the same time. If the battery is aged or sitting at a low state of charge, the combined draw causes a brief voltage sag that the BMS reads as an unsafe drop, momentarily cutting output and dropping the wireless link. This is not a radio fault — it is the BMS protecting the cell. Start each shift with a fully charged pack and the connection drops should stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

My WT2200 stopped reading barcodes right after I put in the new battery — what's wrong?

The laser or imager in the WT2200 needs a stable voltage above a minimum threshold to fire correctly — if the new pack shipped at a low state of charge, the scanner powers on but the scan engine doesn't get enough voltage to activate. Place the scanner in its cradle and run a full charge cycle before attempting any scans. We confirmed on the bench that the BMS accepts charge normally from rest; the cell just needs to be brought up first. Once fully charged, the scan engine should respond immediately on the trigger pull.

The new battery doesn't seem to last as long through a shift as our old one did — is something wrong with the pack?

Shift endurance on the WT2200 drops when scan burst frequency is high and the wireless radio is polling constantly — both loads run simultaneously and drain the 1800mAh cell faster than light-duty scanning alone. Check whether the wireless polling interval has changed or whether scan volume has increased since the last battery. Also confirm the pack completed a full first charge cycle in the cradle before being put into service — an incompletely initialised cell will show reduced capacity until it has been through two or three full charge and discharge cycles. Run the pack through three complete cradle charges and compare endurance again.

The scanner gets noticeably warm after a long shift — is that a battery issue or a scanner issue?

Warmth after an extended shift is normal for the WT2200's form factor — the housing is compact and encloses both the wireless radio and the scan engine, so heat from sustained combined draw has nowhere to dissipate quickly. The battery itself generates some heat under continuous load, but the cell temperature should drop within a few minutes of the scanner going idle. If the pack stays hot to the touch after 10 minutes of rest, check that the battery bay cover is seating flush — a gap traps heat and prevents passive cooling. Place the scanner on its cradle and let the thermal management circuit bring the cell back to resting temperature before the next shift.
