Install it when the original cell no longer holds a charge or when the BIOS flags battery health as degraded.

Why the M72 BIOS reports poor battery health after a cell swap

The M72 BIOS reads health data stored in the original cell's EEPROM. When a new cell goes in, that EEPROM data is either absent or mismatched, so the BIOS flags the battery as unknown or degraded even though the cell is fresh. This is a data mismatch, not a hardware fault. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate then a complete uninterrupted charge to 100%, and the BIOS will recalibrate against the new cell's actual parameters.

M72 shutting down at 20–30% charge remaining

This symptom points to a voltage cliff in a degraded original cell — under combined CPU and display load, internal resistance climbs and terminal voltage drops below the BMS cutoff threshold before the fuel gauge reaches zero. The OS reads an inaccurate state-of-charge right up until the cell can no longer sustain voltage, then the system cuts immediately. Fitting a fresh cell with lower internal resistance resolves the abrupt shutdown. After installation, confirm the cell holds above 14.0V under load before trusting the fuel gauge readout.

My M72 shows the new battery as 0% or "unknown" in Windows — did I get a dead cell?

The M72 fuel gauge IC calibrates against charge and discharge history stored from the previous cell. A brand-new cell with no history reads as unknown or 0% until the IC runs at least one full cycle. Discharge the laptop to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. After that cycle, the fuel gauge will read accurately.

The M72 BIOS still shows battery health as "poor" after I installed the replacement — is that normal?

Yes — this is an EEPROM mismatch, not a fault with the new cell. The BIOS pulls health data from EEPROM records written by the original battery, and a replacement cell carries no matching history. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by a complete charge to 100%, and the BIOS learn cycle will update to reflect the new cell's actual capacity.

The battery percentage in Windows jumps around and is obviously wrong for the first few uses — what's happening?

The fuel gauge IC on the M72 board uses accumulated cycle data to estimate state-of-charge. With a new cell, that dataset is empty, so the IC interpolates against stale parameters and the readout swings inaccurately. This corrects itself over two to three full charge-discharge cycles as the IC builds a fresh model against the new cell's chemistry. Run the laptop down to hibernate level and back to 100% on each of those cycles — do not interrupt the charges midway.
