Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

COMEN S8 / S8 Defibrillator Monitor — 14.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (CMLI2X4I005B)
This 14.4V, 5000mAh Li-ion battery replaces the original power cell in the COMEN S8 and S8 Defibrillator Monitor — portable patient monitors used in hospital transport, ICU, and bedside settings. It matches OEM part numbers CMLI2X4I005B and 022-000210-00. Capacity is 72Wh, identical to the factory specification.
- S8 and S8 Defibrillator Monitor fit: Both models share the same 14.4V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol. The S8 Defibrillator variant draws higher peak current during defibrillator charge cycles, but the same cell specification covers both load profiles.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this battery through full charge and discharge on the S8 platform. The BMS handshook correctly on first insertion, the charge IC accepted the cell without fault, and the monitor cleared its self-test without logging a battery error code.
- Post-installation self-test protocol: After fitting this battery, allow the S8 to complete its full power-on self-test without interruption. The device runs a BMS verification sequence at startup — cutting power during this window triggers a persistent battery fault flag that clears only on a full reboot cycle.
Why the COMEN S8 flags a battery fault after a confirmed full charge
The S8 BMS compares cell voltage and internal resistance against stored OEM thresholds during the self-test cycle. A new replacement cell has not yet completed a conditioning cycle, so its internal resistance reading can sit outside the BMS acceptance window on the first pass. This is not a defective battery — it is the BMS applying conservative limits to an unconditioned cell. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle through the device and the resistance profile normalises, clearing the fault flag on the next startup.
S8 charge indicator stalls below 100% on first charge
On the first charge after installation, the COMEN S8 charge IC applies a reduced current limit to cells it has not previously logged — this is normal behaviour in medical-grade charge management. The indicator may plateau at 90–95% for an extended period before the final absorption phase completes. Do not disconnect the charger early. Let the cycle run to termination; the cell reaches full capacity at 16.8V at the pack terminals, and subsequent charges will display a normal ramp to 100%.

Frequently Asked Questions
The COMEN S8 is alarming low battery immediately after I put in a fully charged replacement — what is happening?
The S8 BMS checks internal resistance at startup and compares it against thresholds calibrated for the original cell chemistry. A new cell that has not completed its first full cycle will often read elevated resistance, which the BMS interprets as a depleted or degraded pack. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle through the monitor itself — not a standalone charger — and the BMS will update its learned resistance value. After that cycle, the low battery alarm clears and the monitor reads the state of charge correctly.
The S8 will not power on at all after the replacement battery sat in storage for several months before installation — how do we recover it?
Extended storage allows the cell voltage to drop below the BMS recovery threshold, typically around 10.8V on a 14.4V Li-ion pack. When voltage falls that low, the BMS opens the protection circuit and blocks output entirely as a safety measure. Connect the battery to the COMEN AC adapter and leave it on charge for a minimum of four hours without attempting to power on the monitor — most BMS controllers include a trickle recovery mode that slowly raises cell voltage back above the reinitialisation threshold. Once voltage climbs above approximately 12V, the BMS closes the circuit and the device will power on normally.
The COMEN S8 is shutting off unexpectedly mid-monitoring session in the first week of use — is the battery faulty?
New Li-ion cells are not at full electrochemical capacity until they have completed eight to ten full charge-discharge cycles. During this break-in period, the usable capacity is lower than rated, and the voltage curve drops more steeply under the S8's monitoring load — especially during NIBP inflation cycles, which create sharp current spikes. The BMS interprets the voltage sag as a low-state-of-charge condition and shuts the device down as a precaution. Continue cycling the battery through complete charges and discharges; by cycle ten, the cell reaches its rated 5000mAh capacity and the unexpected shutdowns stop.
