A new cell with an uncalibrated fuel gauge IC is the most common cause of early shutdowns on the 8809. The coulomb counter still tracks the old cell's discharge curve, so the phone thinks it has 25% remaining when the cell voltage has already dropped below the modem's minimum operating voltage. Under modem or screen load, voltage collapses fast and the phone cuts out. One full discharge to near-zero followed by a slow charge to 100% resets the reference point the fuel gauge uses.

Phone feels warm near the battery during the first charge cycle

A new cell arrives with higher internal impedance than a broken-in cell. During the first charge, the 8809's charge IC pushes current into that higher-resistance cell, and some of that energy converts to heat rather than stored charge. This is normal for cycle one and typically reduces by cycle two or three. If the phone stays warm past the third full charge, check that no third-party charger is bypassing the charge IC's current limits — use a 5V/1A source for the break-in cycles.
