Li-ion cells self-discharge at roughly 2–3% per month. A cell stored for a year or more can drop below 2.5V — the threshold at which most BMS circuits engage a deep-discharge lockout to prevent cell damage. The Dopod 838 percentage jumps around — it reads 60%, then skips to 80%, then drops to 40% within minutes of each other.

This is the fuel gauge IC recalibrating its coulomb counter reference after the cell swap. The old calibration data in the IC no longer matches the new cell's actual charge-discharge curve, so readings are erratic until the counter resets. The Dopod 838 feels warm near the battery compartment while charging with the new cell — is that normal?

Some warmth during the first few charge cycles is expected. The temperature should drop to barely noticeable levels after two or three full cycles as the cell's impedance settles.
