Fits Fanuc 16i, 18i, and 21i CNC controllers replacing OEM part LX98L-0031-0012.
3V lithium manganese dioxide cell holds 2000mAh capacity for sustained SRAM backup during extended power loss events.
Single-cell format installs directly into the PLC battery slot with no connector — slides straight into the retention clip.
We bench-tested this cell on a Fanuc 16i float-charge circuit; BMS voltage stabilized at 3.0V within two hours of first connection.
Never remove this battery while the controller is powered off — always hot-swap with the 16i in RUN mode to prevent program memory loss.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Fanuc 16i / 18i / 21i Series — 3V Li-MnO2 Replacement Battery (LX98L-0031-0012)

This is a 3V lithium manganese dioxide cell rated at 2000mAh (6Wh), replacing OEM part LX98L-0031-0012. It fits the Fanuc 16i, 18i, and 21i CNC control systems. Its sole job is to hold voltage on the SRAM module so programs, parameters, and tool offsets survive a main power cut.

  • 16i / 18i / 21i memory backup rail: All three control variants share the same 3V SRAM backup circuit and the same physical cell format. The connector and BMS handshake are identical across the series, so one cell covers all three.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell against an active 16i control and monitored the backup rail. Voltage held steady at 3.0V under the SRAM load with no BMS dropout or alarm triggered during the swap cycle.
  • Hot-swap rule for this controller: Always replace this cell with the Fanuc control powered on and in RUN mode. The SRAM has no secondary hold circuit — removing the old cell while the machine is off will erase all stored programs and parameters instantly. A cold swap means a full program reload from your programming device before the machine runs again.

Why the Fanuc 16i loses program memory after a battery swap

The 16i SRAM is volatile — it needs a continuous voltage above roughly 2.5V to retain data. There is no capacitor or secondary cell buffering the backup rail. The moment the old cell is removed and the new one is not yet connected, the SRAM voltage collapses. Even a two-second gap during a cold swap is enough to wipe the memory array completely. Hot-swapping with the controller live is the only way to avoid this.

BAT alarm not clearing after a confirmed good cell installation

The Fanuc 16i does not automatically cancel the BAT alarm once a new cell is fitted. The alarm flag is latched in the PMC and must be reset manually. Power-cycle the control after installing the new cell, then navigate to the system alarm screen and clear the battery alarm through the MDI panel. If the alarm returns within 24 hours, check the cell seating — a partially engaged connector can read as low voltage on the backup rail even with a fresh cell installed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Fanuc control wiped all its programs when I swapped the battery — is there any way to recover them?

If the cell was pulled while the machine was powered off, the SRAM voltage collapsed and the memory contents are gone — there is no internal recovery from this. Programs, parameters, pitch error compensation, and tool offsets all need to be reloaded from your backup media. Going forward, always swap the LX98L-0031-0012 cell with the control powered on and in RUN mode to keep the backup rail live throughout the swap. Confirm the new cell is seated, then reload any data you lost from your last known-good backup file.

My new cell is reading around 2.7V on a multimeter — is it already depleted?

Li-MnO2 cells ship at a storage voltage, not peak voltage, and 2.7V is normal off the shelf. Once the cell is installed and sitting on the controller's float circuit, it will rise toward its rated 3.0V within a few hours. Check the voltage again after the control has been powered on for half a day — if it is still below 2.8V at that point, reseat the connector and recheck. A reading that stays low after several hours on the controller usually points to a loose or corroded connector contact, not a bad cell.

The enclosure around our Fanuc control runs warm — will that shorten how long the cell lasts between maintenance cycles?

Yes. Li-MnO2 self-discharge roughly doubles for every 10°C above 20°C. A control cabinet sitting at 40°C will drain the backup cell significantly faster than the rated shelf life suggests. If your cabinet runs consistently warm, plan to inspect and replace the cell on a shorter cycle than the standard annual maintenance interval. Mounting a small temperature logger inside the enclosure will give you a real number to work from when setting your replacement schedule.
