This is a 3.7V, 450mAh lithium-polymer battery for the Franklin EST-4016 electronic dictionary. It replaces OEM part number 0D01004506PA0. The EST-4016 is a handheld reference device, and this battery powers both the display and the processing functions.

  • EST-4016 platform fit: The EST-4016 uses a slim Li-Polymer cell to keep the housing thin. This replacement matches the original cell dimensions — 42.52 × 29.86 × 4.42mm — so the connector reaches the board contacts without stressing the ribbon or flex cable.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through full charge and discharge on the EST-4016 board. The BMS accepted the cell without error, the display initialised cleanly, and the protection circuit tripped correctly at the low-voltage cutoff threshold.
  • Contact seating after swap: Once the new cell is connected, press the battery cover down firmly until it clicks. A partially seated cover on the EST-4016 leaves the spring contact fractionally short, which causes the unit to power off immediately after the power button is released.

Saved words and bookmarks disappearing after battery replacement

The EST-4016 stores user data — saved words, bookmarks, and custom entries — in RAM that is backed by the main battery. When the original cell drops below its minimum hold voltage or is removed entirely, that RAM loses power and the data clears. This is normal behaviour, not a device fault. Back up any saved entries using the PC sync cable before pulling the old cell. Restoring from backup after fitting the new battery is the only way to recover that data.

EST-4016 backlight not coming on after a new battery is fitted

The backlight circuit on the EST-4016 draws more current than the display and requires the battery to be above approximately 3.5V to activate. If the replacement cell ships partially discharged, the backlight may stay off even though the screen shows text. Charge the device for at least 30 minutes before testing the backlight. Once the cell reaches 3.7V, the backlight should respond normally to its toggle button.

My Franklin EST-4016 won't stay on after I fit the new battery — it powers off the moment I let go of the button. What's wrong?

The battery cover is almost certainly not fully seated. On the EST-4016, the positive spring contact sits at the edge of the cover, and even a millimetre of gap breaks the circuit the moment you release pressure. Press the cover down firmly until you hear or feel it click into place, then test the power button again. If the unit still cuts out, check that the connector on the battery flex is pushed fully into the board socket.

All my saved words and vocabulary lists are gone after replacing the battery. Is there any way to recover them?

When the battery is removed, the EST-4016 loses the voltage that keeps user RAM alive, and any saved words, bookmarks, or custom entries are erased. This is a hardware limitation of the device, not a fault with the replacement cell. If you have not already synced, connect the EST-4016 to a PC with the Franklin sync cable and check whether the software cached a local copy. Going forward, sync before any battery work to avoid losing that data again.

The screen on my EST-4016 shows text but the backlight stays off — the new battery seems to be working but something still isn't right.

The backlight on the EST-4016 needs the cell voltage to be above roughly 3.5V before the circuit activates — the display can render at lower voltages than the backlight requires. Replacement cells sometimes ship at a partial state of charge. Charge the device for 30 minutes, then toggle the backlight button again. If it still doesn't respond after a full charge cycle, confirm the cell is reading 3.7V at the connector with a multimeter.
