Gardena AccuCut 400Li cutting line keeps breaking or stops feeding mid-trim — is that a battery problem or the head?

On the AccuCut 400Li's Rotor-Cut system, premature line breaks are almost always a blade or disc issue, not the battery — but if the motor is starving for current, it creates uneven torque that shreds line faster than normal. Check the battery terminals for corrosion or debris causing a partial connection, which drops voltage under load and makes the motor lurch. Put a multimeter on the battery under load: anything reading below 15V during cutting suggests the pack is sagging too hard for the 9,000 rpm motor to hold stable speed. Clean the contacts first, then retest before assuming the cutting head is the culprit.

That stop-start behaviour on a grass trimmer is a thermal protection cutoff triggering inside the battery pack — the cells heat up under sustained load, the BMS shuts the pack down, and it recovers once it cools. Li-ion packs at 18V in this capacity class are particularly prone to this when the cells have degraded or when dense, wet grass forces the motor to draw hard for extended stretches. We found on the bench that a replacement pack with healthy cells runs consistently through the same load cycle without the dropout. If it happens within the first few passes on a new battery, check that the battery is fully charged before starting — a partially charged pack hits thermal limits faster.

New battery charged fully but the AccuCut 400Li feels noticeably weaker than the old one used to be when it was new

A freshly charged replacement pack that feels underpowered usually means the cells haven't gone through their initial formation cycles yet — Li-ion cells often deliver slightly below rated capacity for the first two to three full charge-discharge cycles before they settle. Run the trimmer until the charge indicator drops, charge it completely, and repeat that cycle twice before judging performance. If it still feels sluggish after three cycles, measure resting voltage after a full charge: a healthy 18V Li-ion pack should read between 20V and 21V off the charger. Anything below 19.5V at rest points to a weak or mismatched cell in the pack, not a break-in issue.
