Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Snow Joe iONMAX Snow Blower & Outdoor Tools — 40V Li-ion Replacement Battery
This 40V 4000mAh lithium-ion battery replaces the IBAT40 and IBAT40XR across Snow Joe's iONMAX cordless platform. It fits the iON18SB single-stage snow blower and a range of compatible 40V iONMAX models including the iON16CS chainsaw, iON16LM lawn mower, and iON13SS string trimmer. Capacity is rated at 160Wh — same voltage rail as the original.
- iONMAX platform compatibility: All listed models share the same 40V battery interface, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol — one battery pack works across the entire lineup without adapters.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran full charge/discharge cycles — the BMS held voltage steady under load and tripped the low-voltage cutoff cleanly without triggering a fault lockout on the tool.
- First charge before use: With Li-ion packs coming off storage, run a full charge cycle before the first use — this lets the BMS calibrate cell state-of-charge accurately from the start.
Cold-weather performance on a 40V snow blower
Li-ion cells lose available capacity in freezing temperatures — this is a chemistry limitation, not a defect. When running the iON18SB in sub-zero conditions, keep the battery indoors until just before use. The pack will perform closer to rated capacity when it starts warm. Store it indoors after each session, never in an unheated garage or vehicle overnight.
Tool powers on but cuts out under load — here's what's happening
If the snow blower starts but shuts off when the auger hits heavy, wet snow, the BMS is tripping on an overcurrent event — not a bad battery. The cells are drawing more current than the protection circuit allows under peak demand. Let the pack cool for five minutes, then re-engage at a slower feed rate. If it trips repeatedly, check that the pack contacts are clean and fully seated in the battery port.

Frequently Asked Questions
Snow Joe iON18SB cuts out halfway through the driveway and won't restart for a few minutes — what's happening?
That's thermal cutoff. The 40V pack is pulling hard against heavy or wet snow, the cells hit their temperature ceiling, and the BMS shuts everything down until it cools. It's not a faulty battery — it's the protection circuit doing its job, but it means the pack is working harder than it should be. Check that the auger isn't packing snow instead of throwing it, which puts sustained high-draw load on the motor, and if the snow is wet and dense, make two passes at half-depth instead of one full pass.
Replaced the IBAT40 and now the snow blower runs but feels weaker than it did on the old battery — auger seems sluggish on packed snow.
A new lithium pack often performs below its peak for the first few charge cycles while the cells balance internally. If the sluggishness persists after three full charge-discharge cycles, check that the battery is fully seated and the terminals are clean and making solid contact — a partial connection causes voltage sag under load, which looks exactly like an underpowered motor. Put a multimeter on the pack terminals before installing it; a fully charged 40V lithium pack should read between 42V and 42.5V at rest.
Snow Joe charger light keeps blinking and never goes solid — pack won't fully charge after sitting in the garage all winter.
A lithium pack that sits discharged for months can drop below the threshold the charger needs to begin a normal charge cycle. Most chargers interpret a deeply discharged pack as a fault and blink rather than charge. Let the pack sit at room temperature for a few hours first — cold cells from an unheated garage read artificially low and trigger the same blinking fault. Then reconnect to the charger and check whether the light shifts to solid within the first ten minutes; if it still blinks, measure pack voltage directly — anything below roughly 30V on a 40V lithium pack means the cells have self-discharged past safe recovery.
