Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

GOULD 884 / 984X-008 / ASC11 — 3V Li-MnO2 Replacement Battery

This is a 3V lithium-manganese dioxide cell rated at 1350mAh, replacing the internal backup battery in GOULD 884, 984X-008, ASC11/BASIC, and B885 programmable logic controllers. It powers the real-time clock and SRAM memory retention circuit, keeping program data intact when mains power drops. Without a healthy cell, the PLC loses its program and clock on every power interruption.

  • 884 and 984X-008 series compatibility: These controllers share the same 3V lithium cell format and memory backup architecture. The voltage rail feeding the SRAM retention circuit is identical across the 884, 984X-008, ASC11/BASIC, and B885, which is why one cell covers all of them.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We verified open-circuit voltage on arrival and confirmed the cell holds above 3.0V under the low-current SRAM retention load. The BMS handshake on these controllers is passive — no digital authentication required.
  • Hot-swap rule for GOULD PLCs: Always replace this battery with the controller powered on and in RUN mode. Removing the cell while the PLC is de-energised wipes SRAM instantly. If the PLC was off during the swap, a full program reload from the programming device is required before restarting.

GOULD 884 losing program memory after battery swap

The 884 uses volatile SRAM for program storage, and the backup cell is the only thing keeping it alive when mains power is absent. The moment the old cell is pulled and the new one is not yet seated, SRAM power collapses — that window is enough to wipe the program entirely. Even a two-second gap during a cold swap is sufficient for data loss. The only recovery is reconnecting the programming terminal and downloading the program again from a saved project file.

Battery alarm not clearing after the new cell is installed

GOULD and Modicon-lineage PLCs do not auto-clear the battery fault flag when a fresh cell is seated. The alarm bit is latched in the controller's status word and requires a manual reset through the programming software — typically by writing a zero to the battery fault bit in the status file or sending a clear-faults command. Confirm the new cell reads above 2.8V on a multimeter first to rule out a genuinely flat replacement. Once the bit is cleared in software, the alarm light should go off immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

My GOULD 884 is showing a battery alarm even though I just put a new cell in — what is wrong?

The 884 latches the battery fault bit in its status word and does not clear it automatically when a new cell is fitted. Open the programming software, navigate to the controller status file, and manually reset the battery fault bit — or send a clear-faults command. Confirm the replacement cell reads above 2.8V open-circuit before doing this to rule out a dead-on-arrival cell.

The new battery reads lower than 3V on my multimeter — is it defective?

Li-MnO2 cells are shipped at storage voltage, which can sit between 2.85V and 2.95V out of the packet. Once the cell is seated in the PLC and sitting on the controller's float charge circuit, voltage rises to the rated 3V within a few hours. Re-check with a multimeter after the PLC has been powered and running for four hours — if it has not climbed above 2.9V by then, the cell warrants return.

The GOULD 884 clock is showing the wrong date and time after I replaced the battery — how do I fix it?

The real-time clock circuit loses sync the moment battery voltage drops during a swap, even briefly. The RTC does not recover the previous time automatically — it resets to a default or holds a corrupted value. Connect the programming terminal, navigate to the clock/calendar setting in the controller software, and enter the correct date and time manually. If the PLC was swapped cold and the program was also lost, reload the program first, then set the clock.
