11.1V, 3700mAh lithium-ion cell delivers 41.07Wh — matches the original capacity for full runtime on this ultraportable business notebook.
Connector attaches to the EliteBook 2170p slot without modification; locking tab seats flush against the chassis frame on insertion.
We bench-tested this cell across full discharge cycles; the BMS maintained stable voltage delivery under sustained CPU and display load without premature cutoff.
After installation, discharge the laptop to hibernation shutdown, then charge uninterrupted to 100% — this resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warnings that appear after every cell swap.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

HP EliteBook 2170p — 11.1V Li-ion Replacement Battery (HSTNN-YB3L / MI06)

This 11.1V, 3700mAh (41.07Wh) lithium-ion battery replaces the original cell in the HP EliteBook 2170p ultraportable business notebook. It cross-references OEM part numbers including 670953-851, 670954-851, HSTNN-W90C, HSTNN-UB3W, MI04, and MI06. If your 2170p no longer holds a charge or won't run off battery, this cell is the direct replacement.

  • EliteBook 2170p platform fitment: All listed OEM part numbers share the same 11.1V three-cell configuration, connector pinout, and BMS communication protocol used by the 2170p's EC firmware. Swapping between any of these part numbers does not require a firmware change.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on the 2170p platform. The BMS handshake completed correctly, the EC firmware accepted the cell without error flags, and charge current tapered normally at the top of the charge curve.
  • Post-installation learn cycle on the 2170p: After fitting the new cell, discharge the laptop to hibernate cutoff under normal use, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that commonly appears after a cell swap on this platform.

BIOS reporting poor battery health immediately after fitting a new cell

The EliteBook 2170p BIOS reads health data from the battery's EEPROM, which stores cycle count and rated capacity figures from the previous cell. When a new cell arrives, the EEPROM values don't yet match what the fuel gauge IC is measuring from actual charge cycles. The BIOS flags this mismatch as "poor health" or "consider replacing." Running one full discharge-to-hibernate then a full uninterrupted charge resolves the mismatch by forcing the fuel gauge IC to recalibrate against the new cell's actual chemistry.

Laptop shuts down at 20–30% battery shown on a new cell

This happens because the fuel gauge IC still holds the old cell's voltage-to-capacity curve in memory. When the new cell hits its actual low-voltage knee — typically around 9.9–10.2V under CPU and display load — the laptop cuts off even though the OS gauge still shows charge remaining. The gauge hasn't yet mapped where this cell's voltage cliff sits. Two to three full discharge and charge cycles let the fuel gauge IC recalibrate the curve, and the shutdowns stop once the percentage readout tracks real cell voltage accurately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the HP EliteBook 2170p show "0% available (plugged in, charging)" for the first few minutes after fitting a new battery?

The fuel gauge IC lost its reference data when the old cell was removed and hasn't yet read the new cell's state of charge. The EC firmware reports 0% until the first charge cycle gives the IC enough data to calculate a real figure. Leave the laptop plugged in — the percentage will update within one full charge cycle and stabilise after two to three cycles.

The BIOS System Information screen shows the wrong Wh rating after I installed this battery — is the cell faulty?

It isn't faulty. The Wh figure in BIOS System Information is pulled from the battery EEPROM's rated capacity field, which reflects the original OEM cell's programmed value, not the physical chemistry in the new cell. The actual usable energy delivered matches the 41.07Wh spec. Run a full discharge-to-hibernate and a full charge to let the fuel gauge IC write accurate data to the EEPROM and update the displayed figure.

The EliteBook 2170p stops charging at exactly 80% and never goes higher — what is causing this?

The 2170p BIOS includes a Battery Health Manager setting that caps charge at 80% to slow cell wear. It ships disabled but can be toggled on accidentally in HP BIOS Setup. Enter BIOS Setup (F10 at boot), navigate to Power > Battery Health Manager, and set it to "Let HP manage my battery charging" or "Full charge." The 80% cap will lift on the next charge cycle.
