Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

HP EliteBook 8460p Series — 10.8V Li-ion Replacement Battery (628369-421)

This 10.8V, 4400mAh (47.52Wh) Li-ion battery replaces the original cell in the HP EliteBook 8460p, 8460w, 8470p, and 6360t Mobile Thin Client. It uses the same connector, voltage rail, and BMS handshake as the factory cell. Install it when the original no longer holds a usable charge.

  • EliteBook 8460p / 8460w / 8470p / 6360t platform fit: These models share the same 10.8V rail, six-cell connector pinout, and SMBUS communication protocol — so one cell works across the whole group without wiring or firmware differences.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this battery on an EliteBook 8460p and confirmed the BMS negotiated correctly over SMBUS, the fuel gauge initialised without error, and the charge circuit accepted a full cycle from 0% to 100%.
  • First-cycle calibration on EliteBook: After installing, let the laptop discharge fully until it hibernates, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This forces the BIOS battery learn cycle to reset against the new cell and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap.

BIOS reporting battery health as poor immediately after replacement

The HP EliteBook BIOS reads health data from the battery's EEPROM on first contact. The EEPROM on a new cell carries rated values, not real-world cycle data, so the BIOS flags a mismatch and marks health as poor or unknown. This is a calibration state, not a fault. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100%, and the BIOS learn cycle will update its reference data against the new cell's actual voltage curve.

Laptop shutting down at 20–30% charge shown on screen

This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated against the new cell's actual capacity. The gauge reports 25% remaining, but the real cell voltage has already dropped below the threshold the system needs to sustain the CPU and display under load. The laptop cuts power before the screen number reaches zero. Run two to three full discharge-and-charge cycles — after that the gauge tracks the real voltage curve and shutdowns stop before the displayed percentage reads below 10%.

Frequently Asked Questions

HP Elitebook 8460p BIOS shows the new battery as "unknown" or won't display a percentage at all — what's happening?

The BIOS lost its SMBUS handshake with the old cell's EEPROM data and hasn't built a new reference yet. This clears itself after one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100%. That sequence triggers the HP battery learn cycle and writes fresh data from the new cell. After that cycle completes, the percentage and health status display correctly.

Why does the fuel gauge on my 8460p read wildly different numbers — jumping from 60% to 40% without the load changing?

The fuel gauge IC calibrates against the voltage-capacity curve of the specific cell installed. A brand-new cell has a different curve than the degraded original, so the IC's stored curve is no longer accurate — it guesses, and the jumps are the error margin. Run three full discharge-and-charge cycles and the IC will map its readings to the new cell's actual curve. After cycle three, the gauge stabilises and tracks real capacity correctly.

New battery won't charge above 80% on the EliteBook 8460p — is the cell faulty?

The cell is almost certainly not faulty. HP's BIOS includes a charge-limit setting that caps charging at 80% to reduce heat and cycle wear — it ships enabled on some EliteBook builds and survives a battery swap. Go to HP Battery Manager (or check BIOS under Power Management) and disable the optimised battery mode or battery care function. Once that setting is off, the next charge cycle will run to 100%.
