Under combined CPU and display load, the cell voltage drops faster than the gauge can track, and the EC triggers a protective shutdown before the displayed percentage reaches zero. It typically happens when the fuel gauge IC hasn't yet calibrated against the new cell's actual discharge curve. Run two full discharge-to-hibernate cycles back-to-back, charging fully between each. After the second cycle, the gauge IC recalibrates and the shutdowns stop.

The EC is still holding EEPROM data from the old cell and hasn't accepted the new one into its charge profile yet. Disconnect the AC adapter, hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain residual capacitor charge, then reconnect and boot. If the gauge still reads 0%, run the battery down to hibernate-cutoff and charge uninterrupted to 100% — this forces the EC to rewrite the battery profile and the charge reading normalises.

Why does the fuel gauge on my U350 jump from 60% to 85% and back while discharging?

The fuel gauge IC on the U350 calibrates against discharge data from the previous cell. After a swap, it has no accurate reference curve for the new cell's chemistry, so it interpolates badly for the first few cycles. The reading stabilises after two full discharge-to-hibernate and charge-to-100% cycles — the IC builds a new internal map against the actual cell behaviour. By the third cycle, the gauge tracks smoothly.

The U350 system info shows this battery as 40Wh but the spec says 44.4Wh — is the cell underrated?

The Wh figure in system info is pulled from the EEPROM on the cell, which stores the rated value at the time of manufacture. Minor chemistry variances between production batches mean the actual measured capacity can read slightly different from the label figure in the OS. This is an EEPROM reporting difference, not a capacity fault. Run a full discharge and recharge cycle — the EC recalculates actual Wh from the measured discharge curve and the reported figure updates to reflect the real cell capacity.
