This is a 10.8V, 6600mAh (71.28Wh) Li-ion battery for the HP Pavilion dv3-1000 series notebook. It fits the dv3-1000, dv3-1001TX, dv3-1051xx, dv3-1073cl, and additional dv3 variants sharing the same bay and connector. OEM part numbers covered include 500028-142, 500029-142, HSTNN-IB82, HSTNN-IB83, and NB801AA.

  • dv3-1000 series compatibility: These dv3 models share the same 10.8V three-cell-series architecture, identical connector pinout, and a common BMS handshake protocol. One replacement cell covers all listed variants without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on a dv3-1001TX through full charge and discharge cycles. The BMS communicated correctly with the BIOS, charge termination triggered cleanly at 100%, and no protection-circuit trips occurred during load testing.
  • Post-install calibration on the dv3: After fitting, run one full discharge to hibernate-cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without interruption. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the false "poor health" warning that appears in HP Support Assistant after a cell swap.

Why the dv3-1000 shuts down at 20–30% charge remaining

The dv3 BIOS uses fuel gauge data from the battery's EEPROM to predict shutdown voltage. With a new cell, that EEPROM data hasn't been calibrated yet, so the fuel gauge IC miscalculates remaining capacity. Under combined CPU and display load, the cell hits a voltage cliff faster than the gauge predicts, and the BIOS forces an emergency shutdown. Running two or three full discharge-to-hibernate cycles calibrates the fuel gauge IC against the new cell's actual voltage curve and stops the premature cutoffs.

BIOS reporting incorrect Wh rating after replacement

When you swap cells, the BIOS reads the Wh rating stored in the battery's EEPROM — not the actual chemistry. If the EEPROM value doesn't match the new cell's rated capacity, HP Support Assistant and Windows battery reports will show a mismatched Wh figure. This is an EEPROM metadata difference, not a fault with the replacement cell. Confirm actual capacity is correct at 71.28Wh by checking the cell label directly, then allow two full charge cycles for the fuel gauge IC to update its readings.

HP Support Assistant says my new battery health is "poor" straight out of the box — is the cell actually faulty?

No. The dv3 BIOS carries over health data stored in the old battery's EEPROM, and it flags any new cell as poor until a learn cycle runs. Run one full discharge to hibernate-cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. After that cycle, HP Support Assistant will re-read the EEPROM and update the health status correctly.

The fuel gauge on my dv3-1000 is jumping from 60% to 15% with no warning — what's happening?

The fuel gauge IC inside the laptop hasn't calibrated against the new cell's voltage curve yet. It's still using discharge data from the old degraded cell, so percentage drops are erratic and sudden. Run two or three full discharge-to-hibernate cycles followed by uninterrupted charges to 100%. After those cycles, the fuel gauge IC maps the new cell's actual curve and the percentage readout stabilises.

My dv3 stops charging at 80% and never reaches 100% — is this a battery problem?

On most dv3-1000 units this is a BIOS-controlled charge limit, not a cell fault. HP's battery care mode firmware caps charge at 80% to reduce cell stress when the setting is active. Open HP Support Assistant, go to Battery settings, and disable the charge limit or set the threshold to 100%. The cell itself charges to full capacity once that firmware restriction is lifted.
