Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

I-Mate PDA-L — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (UF553450U)

This is a 3.7V, 1100mAh Li-ion battery for the I-Mate PDA-L and PDAL. It replaces OEM parts UF553450U, UF553450Z, XWD051087, and XWD033454. The PDA-L is a Windows Mobile smartphone-PDA hybrid from the mid-2000s — voice calls, email, and basic computing in one unit.

  • PDA-L and PDAL fit: Both model designations share the same battery bay geometry, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol — the cell and protection circuit are identical across both variants.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran the cell through charge and discharge cycles on the PDA-L platform. The BMS accepted the full charge cycle without tripping overcurrent protection, and the fuel gauge IC engaged correctly after the first full discharge.
  • Fuel gauge recalibration on first use: After installing this cell, disable any sync or active data connections and run one full discharge before recharging. The PDA-L fuel gauge IC is calibrated against the old cell's discharge curve — one complete cycle lets it recalibrate against the new cell's actual capacity before reporting accurate percentages.

Why the PDA-L shuts down suddenly at 20–30% remaining

The PDA-L draws a sharp current spike when the modem transmits or the backlight fires at full brightness. An aged or freshly installed cell with an uncalibrated fuel gauge can hit a voltage cliff — internal resistance causes the cell voltage to sag below the BMS cutoff threshold faster than the reported percentage suggests. The device interprets this as a fault and shuts down even though the fuel gauge still shows charge remaining. After one full discharge-charge cycle, the fuel gauge IC maps the new cell's actual voltage-to-capacity curve, and the cutoff point aligns with the real remaining charge.

Device warm near the battery compartment during first charge

A new Li-ion cell has slightly higher impedance than a broken-in cell. During the first charge, the charge IC pushes current into higher resistance, which generates more heat than you'd see from a well-cycled battery. This is normal and should taper off after the first two full cycles as the cell's internal impedance drops. If the device stays warm beyond two full charge cycles, check that the battery contacts are fully seated — a partially connected cell forces the charge IC to work harder to maintain current flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

My I-Mate PDA-L powers off without warning while I'm in a call or using the screen — the battery still shows 25% when I restart it. What's happening?

This is a voltage cliff failure. Under modem or backlight load, the cell voltage sags below the BMS cutoff faster than the fuel gauge can track — so the device shuts down while the percentage display still looks healthy. The fuel gauge IC on the PDA-L was calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve, not the new one. Run one complete discharge down to auto-shutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%, and the IC will remap its curve to the new cell.

After fitting the replacement battery, the percentage jumps around — it reads 60%, then skips to 80%, then drops to 45% within minutes. Is the battery faulty?

The battery is not faulty — the fuel gauge IC is recalibrating. The coulomb counter inside the PDA-L tracked the old cell's charge state over time; with a new cell installed, it has no valid reference curve yet and produces erratic readings until it completes a full cycle. Let the device discharge completely to automatic shutoff, then charge to 100% without interruption. After that single cycle, the percentage should stabilise and track correctly.

The PDA-L won't turn on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for several months before I installed it. The charger light comes on briefly then goes off.

The cell has self-discharged below the BMS lockout threshold — typically under 2.5V per cell — and the protection circuit has shut down the output to prevent damage. The brief charger light means the charge IC detects the pack but the BMS is blocking current flow. Connect the device to the charger and leave it undisturbed for 20–30 minutes; some charge ICs will trickle a low pre-charge current (around 0.1C) to bring the cell voltage back above the 2.9V re-enable threshold before switching to normal charge mode. If the light stays on steadily after that period, the BMS has re-initialised and normal charging has resumed.
