Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Icom IC-31A / IC-51A Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BP-271 / BP-272Li)

This is a 7.4V, 3300mAh Li-ion battery for the Icom IC-31A, IC-31E, IC-51A, and IC-51E handheld transceivers. These are compact VHF/UHF two-way radios used in portable field and professional communications. The battery slots into the same dock position as the original BP-271 and BP-272Li packs.

  • IC-31 and IC-51 platform fit: Both series run the same 7.4V rail, use the same gold-contact connector, and share a BMS handshake protocol — one battery covers both. The BP-271 and BP-272Li OEM references both map to this cell configuration.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through full charge and PTT transmit loads on the IC-51 platform. The BMS handled the transmit current spike without tripping, and the dock accepted the pack on first insertion after a contact wipe.
  • First insertion on the Icom dock: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Icom platform requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging begins.

IC-31A / IC-51A bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected on a new pack

New Li-ion cells ship at storage voltage — typically around 3.7–3.8V per cell, which puts the pack near 7.5V total. The IC-31 and IC-51 voltage-threshold bar system reads this as one bar below full. The radio is not faulty and the battery is not defective. Run a full charge cycle first; once the pack reaches 8.4V, the bar indicator will read correctly.

Radio cuts out mid-transmission on PTT press with new battery inserted

Pressing PTT draws a hard current spike as the RF stage ramps up — on the IC-51 platform this can exceed 1.5A for a brief moment. If the gold contact strip has residue or oxidation, that spike causes a voltage drop at the terminal that the BMS reads as an overcurrent event and trips. Remove the pack, clean all six contact points on both the battery and dock with a dry cloth, reseat the battery, and confirm the dock accepts it before transmitting again.

Frequently Asked Questions

The charger dock fault LED never clears after inserting the new BP-271 — it just keeps blinking. What's wrong?

A new pack shipped at storage voltage can sit below the dock's acceptance threshold, causing the fault LED to loop. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip clean, and reseat it firmly — the Icom dock needs a clean contact cycle to register the BMS. If the LED still blinks, leave the pack seated for 10 minutes; some Icom docks trickle-charge below-threshold packs before switching to full charge mode.

My IC-51A drops to noticeably weaker TX output after a few hours of use, even with bars showing on the indicator — why?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF load, not a fault. As the cell discharges mid-range, output voltage dips under transmit current draw, and the radio's PA stage reduces power to stay within spec. The bar indicator is a resting-voltage snapshot — it doesn't reflect real-time sag. If TX output feels weak, check resting voltage with a multimeter across the contacts; anything below 7.2V under no-load means the pack needs a recharge.

The IC-31E has been sitting unused for several months and the battery won't charge at all now — is the pack dead?

Extended storage can drop cell voltage below the BMS recovery threshold, which locks the pack out of normal charging. Insert the pack into the dock and leave it undisturbed for 20–30 minutes — Icom chargers apply a low-current recovery pulse before switching to full charge. If the dock light never changes state after 30 minutes, check that the terminal voltage reads at least 6.0V with a multimeter; packs that have dropped below 6.0V across both cells may not recover.
