Intermec SG20 Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (SGBAT / SG20-BP01)

This is a 3.7V, 1600mAh Li-ion battery for the Intermec SG20 barcode scanner family. It fits the SG20, SG20B, SG20B1D, SG20B2D, and six additional variants in the SG20 line. It replaces OEM part numbers SGBAT and SG20-BP01 directly.

  • SG20 series compatibility: All SG20 variants share the same 3.7V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. Swapping between SG20B, SG20B1D, and SG20B2D models does not require reconfiguring the pack — the dock recognises it the same way.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack under a combined scan-trigger and wireless polling load. The BMS held voltage within spec through sustained bursts and tripped at the correct low-voltage cutoff without false positives.
  • First-shift preparation: After installing the pack, seat the scanner in its cradle and run a full charge cycle before picking. The scan trigger draws the highest inrush current when the cell is near minimum charge — a depleted pack on the first shift is the most common cause of BMS trips that look like a faulty battery.

The SG20 cradle uses contact resistance to confirm a valid pack before initiating a charge cycle. If the dock contacts or the battery terminals have any residue from packaging or handling, the cradle reads high resistance and throws a charge error. This is not a fault with the cell itself. Wipe the gold contacts on both the pack and the dock with a dry cloth, reseat the scanner firmly, and the charge indicator should go solid within 10 seconds.

During a fast scan sequence, the SG20 draws simultaneously from the imager and the wireless radio. This combined inrush can pull voltage down briefly on a cell that is below 3.5V. The radio module is the first subsystem to drop out when voltage sags — the imager keeps firing but the connection drops. Charge the pack to full (4.2V) before a high-frequency scanning shift to keep the voltage rail stable under combined load.

My SG20 scanner stopped reading barcodes right after I put in the new battery — what's happening?

The imager needs a stable voltage above 3.4V to fire consistently. A new pack shipped at partial charge can sit just above the minimum, and the first scan trigger pulls it below the imager's operating threshold. Place the scanner in its cradle and charge fully to 4.2V before using it on the floor — the reading failure will clear on its own once the cell is at capacity.

The scanner feels noticeably warm after a few hours of continuous scanning — is that normal?

Sustained combined load — imager firing plus wireless polling — generates real heat in the SG20's enclosed housing, and the battery contributes to that. Warmth is expected; hot to the touch is not. If the pack surface exceeds roughly 45°C, the BMS will throttle output to protect the cell. Rotate the pack out at a break rather than running it until the BMS trips.

This battery doesn't last through a full shift even though it's new — what should I check first?

Scan burst frequency and wireless polling interval both draw from the same 1600mAh cell simultaneously. If the SG20 is configured for aggressive wireless polling — common in high-density warehouse RF environments — the effective drain is significantly higher than light scanning use. Check the wireless polling interval in the device settings and reduce it if the network allows; this is the single biggest contributor to short shift endurance on a correctly functioning pack.
