Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Kaufel 002277 — 6V Ni-CD Replacement Battery (BGN700-5AWP-FP)
This is a 6V 700mAh Ni-CD replacement battery for the Kaufel 002277 emergency lighting unit. It fits the 002277 fixture directly, restoring backup illumination during mains failure. Voltage and capacity match the original cell: 6V, 700mAh (4.2Wh).
- Kaufel 002277 fitment: The 002277 fixture uses a 6V Ni-CD cell with a specific connector and physical envelope — 142.50 × 19.50 × 17.10mm. The charge controller in this fitting expects Ni-CD chemistry. Swapping to a different chemistry at this voltage will confuse the charge circuit and cause false fault states.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through a full charge-discharge cycle on the bench. The BMS accepted charge within the expected float window, and the cell held load voltage without dropping below the cutoff threshold during the test duration.
- Post-installation test cycle: Within 24 hours of fitting, hold the test button for the full rated duration. This confirms the new cell accepts load and lets the charge controller register the fresh cell before your next compliance inspection. Do not skip this step — a cell that has sat in storage will not be at full charge on day one.
Charge indicator staying red after fitting the new cell
The 002277 charge controller uses float voltage to confirm the cell is healthy. A cell that has been in storage for months will arrive with a resting voltage outside the float acceptance window. The controller reads this as a fault and holds the red LED. Leave the fitting powered for 24–48 hours — the trickle charge will bring the cell voltage up into the acceptance range and the indicator should transition to green. If it does not clear after 48 hours, check cell voltage directly: it should be reading above 5.4V under no load.
Emergency light dims and cuts short during a duration test
A cell that has not completed a full conditioning cycle will not deliver its rated 700mAh on the first test. The cell capacity is there — it just has not been fully cycled after storage. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle using the manual test button before your compliance test date. After that cycle, the cell will reach closer to its rated capacity. If dimming continues after two full cycles, check the fixture's trickle charge current — sustained overcharge at elevated ambient temperature accelerates capacity fade in Ni-CD cells.

Frequently Asked Questions
The fitting still shows a fault LED after I've replaced the battery and confirmed it's seated correctly — what's wrong?
Some Kaufel fittings latch the fault LED in hardware and will not clear it automatically after a battery swap. The fault condition needs to be manually reset by cycling mains power to the fitting — switch off the circuit breaker feeding the unit, wait 10 seconds, then restore power. If the LED clears and returns within a few minutes, check cell voltage directly: a resting voltage below 5.4V will re-trigger the fault flag immediately.
My emergency light passed the flash test fine but failed the full duration test at the next inspection — the battery was replaced less than a year ago.
A short flash test draws very little from the cell, so a degraded or under-conditioned cell can pass it easily. The full duration test pulls sustained current and exposes true capacity. A new Ni-CD cell needs at least one complete charge-discharge cycle after installation before it can deliver its rated 700mAh — if that cycle was never run, the cell may not have reached full capacity before the inspection. Schedule a manual full-duration test cycle immediately after any battery replacement, and log it so you have a baseline before the compliance date.
The replacement battery looks swollen inside the fitting after about 18 months — is this a fault with the cell or the fitting?
Swelling in Ni-CD cells at this voltage is almost always caused by continuous overcharge, not a defective cell. The 002277's trickle charge circuit is calibrated for a cell in normal operating condition — if the fitting runs at elevated ambient temperature, even a correctly rated charge current can push the cell into overcharge over time. Check that the fitting is not mounted directly above a heat source and that ventilation around the unit is not obstructed. A swollen cell must be replaced immediately, as internal pressure can compromise the seal and cause electrolyte leakage inside the fitting.
