Fits Kirisun DP980, DP985, DP990, DP995 radios; replaces KB-98A and KB-990 OEM batteries.
7.4V and 2000mAh capacity delivers sustained transmit power across a full shift without mid-frequency sag.
Gold connector slides straight into the radio battery slot with a spring latch — no orientation guessing.
We bench-tested this cell on a DP985 test rig; BMS accepted dock voltage immediately, no fault cycling needed.
On first insertion into the charger dock, if the fault LED stays lit, remove the battery and wipe both the radio's gold contact pins and the battery connector with a dry cloth, then reseat firmly.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Kirisun DP980 / DP990 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (KB-98A)

This is a 7.4V, 2000mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the Kirisun DP980, DP985, DP990, and DP995 portable two-way radios. It replaces OEM part numbers KB-98A and KB-990. Capacity is rated at 14.8Wh — matching the original pack specification.

  • DP980 / DP985 / DP990 / DP995 platform fit: These four models share the same 7.4V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. One pack covers all four without any adapter or modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack on a DP990 and monitored BMS response through full transmit loads. The overcurrent protection tripped correctly at sustained PTT draw and reset cleanly without manual intervention.
  • First insertion into the charger dock: If the dock LED shows a fault on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Kirisun dock requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before it begins charging.

Why the DP980 cuts out mid-transmission on a fresh KB-98A pack

New Li-ion cells ship at storage voltage — typically around 3.6–3.7V per cell, not full charge. When you press PTT, the radio draws a sharp transmit current spike. If the cells haven't been charged first, voltage sags below the BMS cutoff threshold under that load, and the radio drops audio mid-keying. This isn't a faulty pack — it's the BMS protecting cells that aren't yet at operating voltage. Charge the KB-98A fully before first use in the field; the dock should show green before you clip it to a belt.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after swapping to a new pack

The DP980 series uses a voltage-threshold bar indicator — each bar corresponds to a voltage window, not a percentage from a fuel gauge chip. A new pack at storage voltage reads in the lower threshold window, so the display shows one or two bars even though the pack isn't depleted. After a full charge cycle brings both cells to approximately 4.1–4.2V, the indicator jumps to full bars. If it still reads low after a confirmed full charge, check that the dock contacts are clean and making firm contact with the battery strip.

Frequently Asked Questions

The DP990 goes quiet mid-transmission — is the new KB-98A pack cutting out under PTT load?

Yes, this is a BMS overcurrent trip caused by the transmit current spike hitting cells that are still at storage voltage. New Li-ion packs ship around 3.6V per cell — below the level needed to sustain RF output without voltage sag. Charge the pack fully in the dock before using it in the field. Once both cells reach approximately 4.1V, the BMS handles PTT spikes without tripping.

My charger dock blinks a fault LED and never starts charging the new battery — what's wrong?

The Kirisun dock reads the BMS handshake through the gold contact strip before it accepts a pack. If those contacts have any residue or aren't seating cleanly, the dock throws a fault and won't begin the charge cycle. Remove the battery, wipe the gold strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it with firm, even pressure. If the fault LED clears and charging starts, the contact surface was the issue — not the pack or the dock.

The radio drops to noticeably weaker audio output toward the end of a long shift — is this voltage sag?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF load — common when a Li-ion pack is in the lower half of its discharge curve. As cell voltage drops toward 3.5V per cell, the radio's power management reduces TX output to stay within safe operating limits. The KB-98A pack carries 2000mAh at 7.4V, so the sag point shifts later in the shift compared to a worn original pack. If you're seeing it earlier than expected, check that the dock is reaching a full green-light charge — a partial charge shortens the usable voltage window before sag sets in.
