Laptop shuts down abruptly at 20–30% charge shown on screen

This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated to the new cell's voltage curve. The OS reads a state-of-charge percentage mapped to the old cell's worn discharge profile, so the displayed percentage and actual cell voltage diverge. Under combined CPU and display load, the cell hits the BMS low-voltage cutoff while the screen still shows 20–25% remaining. Complete two full calibration cycles — discharge to hibernate-cutoff each time — and the fuel gauge IC recalibrates to match the new cell, typically resolving the discrepancy by the third charge.

The ThinkPad BIOS shows a "0%" or "unknown" battery reading right after I installed this replacement — is the cell dead?

No — the BIOS is reading a blank or mismatched EEPROM from the new cell's controller board and cannot yet estimate charge state. Boot into Windows and let the battery drain fully to hibernate-cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. After that first full cycle, the BIOS learn cycle resets and the reading normalises to an accurate percentage.

My E46 shows the wrong Wh rating in Lenovo Vantage or Windows power settings after swapping to this battery — why doesn't it match the 48.84Wh spec?

The Wh figure displayed in software is pulled from the EEPROM on the battery's controller board, which stores rated capacity from the original cell's firmware. The new cell's EEPROM may carry a slightly different rated value reflecting the chemistry specification rather than the measured bench figure. This is a data field difference, not a capacity fault. Run one full calibration cycle and check again — if the reading still differs, the EEPROM value is static and does not affect actual charge delivery.

Charging stops at around 80% and won't go higher — is there a fault with the replacement cell?

On ThinkPad Edge models, Lenovo's firmware includes a BIOS-controlled charge threshold that caps charging at 80% when Conservation Mode is active. Check Lenovo Vantage or Power Manager and look for "Battery Charge Threshold" or "Conservation Mode" — disable it, then reconnect the charger. The battery will charge to 100% once the firmware threshold is cleared; this is not a cell fault.
