This 11.1V 6600mAh (73.26Wh) lithium-ion battery replaces the original pack in the ThinkPad X220, X220i, X220s, and X230. It fits the standard 9-cell bay and uses the same connector and BMS handshake as the factory unit. Cross-references include 45N1022, 45N1023, 45N1024, and 45N1025.

  • X220 and X230 platform compatibility: These four models share the same voltage rail, physical bay dimensions, and SMBus BMS protocol. The X230 uses the same connector pinout as the X220, so one pack covers the full chassis generation without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack on a ThinkPad X220 and monitored BMS communication via HWMonitor. The protection circuit tripped correctly at low-voltage cutoff and the SMBus returned accurate state-of-charge data within two full cycles.

BIOS reporting poor battery health immediately after replacement

Lenovo's Power Manager reads cycle count and wear data stored in the battery's EEPROM. A new cell ships with zeroed or mismatched EEPROM values, which the BIOS interprets as a degraded pack. This is a firmware read issue, not a fault with the replacement cell. Run the full discharge-to-hibernate then uninterrupted charge sequence once — Power Manager updates its health assessment after the learn cycle completes.

Laptop shuts down hard at 20–30% charge shown on screen

The fuel gauge IC on the ThinkPad mainboard calibrates its discharge curve against the old cell's chemistry profile. With a new cell, the stored curve is wrong — the gauge shows 25% while actual cell voltage has already dropped below the load threshold. Under combined CPU and display draw, the pack hits voltage cliff before the gauge catches up. After two to three full discharge and charge cycles, the fuel gauge IC re-maps the curve against the new cell and the shutdowns stop.

ThinkPad X220 Power Manager says battery health is "Poor" the moment I put the new battery in — is the replacement faulty?

It is not faulty. Power Manager reads wear-level and cycle-count data from the battery's EEPROM, and a new cell ships with values the BIOS flags as abnormal. Run one full discharge to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. The BIOS battery learn cycle resets and the health status corrects itself after that first complete cycle.

Windows shows a wildly different Wh rating for the new battery than what's printed on the label — why?

The Wh figure Windows reports comes from the battery's EEPROM, which stores the rated design capacity of the original cell chemistry. The replacement cell's EEPROM may report a slightly different value until the fuel gauge IC runs calibration cycles against actual charge throughput. This is an EEPROM data mismatch, not a capacity defect. Run two to three full discharge-and-charge cycles and the reported Wh figure will converge toward the actual 73.26Wh rating.

New battery won't charge past 80% on the ThinkPad X220 — is there a firmware charge limit active?

Yes. Lenovo's BIOS includes a charge threshold feature — check Power Manager or Lenovo Vantage under "Battery charge threshold." If the upper limit is set to 80%, the battery stops there by firmware instruction, not because of a cell fault. Open the threshold settings and set the stop-charging value to 100%, then reconnect the charger. The pack will charge to full on the next charge cycle.
