This 11.1V 4400mAh (48.84Wh) Li-ion battery is a direct cell swap for the ThinkPad X220 Tablet, X220i Tablet, X220t, and X230t. It fits the convertible form factor that pivots between laptop and tablet modes. Voltage and connector match the original Lenovo spec for these models.

BIOS reporting battery health as poor immediately after replacement

ThinkPad firmware stores cell health data in EEPROM from the previous battery. When a new cell is installed, the BIOS reads stale EEPROM values and flags the battery as degraded — even at 100% charge. This is not a fault with the new cell. Run the Lenovo Battery Gauge Reset tool or complete two full discharge-to-hibernate and full-recharge cycles. After calibration, the BIOS should report capacity above 90% of rated 48.84Wh.

Laptop shuts down at 20–30% charge shown on the fuel gauge

This happens when the fuel gauge IC has not calibrated against the new cell chemistry. The gauge IC carries over learned capacity curves from the old battery and misjudges the voltage cliff. Under combined CPU and display load, the cell voltage drops faster than the stale curve predicts, triggering an emergency shutdown before the displayed percentage reaches zero. Complete a full uninterrupted discharge to hibernate — do not plug in mid-cycle — then charge to 100%. The fuel gauge recalibrates against the actual cell and the shutdowns stop.

Why does ThinkPad Power Manager show the wrong Wh rating after I installed the new battery?

The Wh figure displayed in Power Manager pulls from the EEPROM data written to the original cell — not from the new cell's actual chemistry. The replacement cell is rated at 48.84Wh, but the old EEPROM entry may show a different value until the firmware updates it. Run one full discharge-to-hibernate cycle followed by a full uninterrupted charge to 100%. After that cycle, Power Manager reads the live cell data and the Wh figure corrects itself.

My ThinkPad X220 Tablet charges the new battery to 80% then stops — is the cell faulty?

The cell is not faulty. Lenovo ThinkPad firmware includes a BIOS-level charge threshold setting that caps charging at 80% to reduce long-term cell stress — it ships enabled on many units. Open Lenovo Vantage or ThinkPad Battery Gauge, navigate to Battery Charge Threshold, and set the stop-charge value to 100%. The cell will then charge fully on the next cycle.

The battery shows as "Unknown" or 0% in Windows immediately after fitting — what causes that?

The fuel gauge IC has not yet completed its initialisation handshake with the new cell. Windows reads 0% or Unknown when the IC returns no valid state-of-charge data. Plug in the AC adapter, leave the laptop powered on for 10 minutes without interruption, then check the status again. If it persists, shut down completely, remove the AC adapter, reseat the battery, then boot with AC connected — this forces a fresh BMS initialisation and the gauge returns a valid reading.
