My Mafell KSS 40 cuts out immediately when I pull the trigger — is the battery faulty?
This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a dead battery. The KSS 40 brushless motor draws a sharp inrush current spike at trigger pull, and if the BMS overcurrent threshold is set conservatively — common on new or very cold packs — it trips before the motor reaches running speed. Warm the pack to room temperature first; cold Li-ion cells have higher internal resistance, which amplifies the voltage sag at trigger pull and makes the trip worse. If it still cuts out, check that the battery rail contacts on both the pack and the tool are clean and making full contact — high contact resistance raises apparent inrush current at the BMS sensor. Clean the contacts with isopropyl alcohol and retry.
The saw runs but bogs badly under load and feels like it has half the power — what's happening?
Voltage sag under load is the cause. When the cell capacity has degraded from repeated shallow cycling — topping up at 70–80% repeatedly without full discharge cycles — the internal resistance of the cells rises and the voltage rail drops under motor load. Pull the pack off the tool mid-job and check the resting voltage; a healthy 18V Li-ion pack should read between 19.5V and 20V at rest. If it reads below 18V at rest, the cells have lost usable capacity and the pack needs replacing. Running full discharge-to-charge cycles can slow this degradation going forward.
The battery works fine indoors but cuts out fast on cold job sites — is something wrong with this pack?
Nothing is wrong — this is normal Li-ion behaviour below 5°C. Cold temperatures raise the internal resistance of lithium-ion cells significantly, which reduces available current delivery and causes the BMS to trip overcurrent protection earlier under the same motor load that would be fine at room temperature. Store the pack in a heated space or vehicle until just before use — a pack that starts a cut at 15°C will outperform one that starts at 2°C under the same load conditions. Avoid leaving the pack on a cold concrete floor between uses, as the housing conducts heat away from the cells faster than most users expect.
