Fits Magellan GPS 750M and GPS 750M Plus handheld navigators; replaces OEM part 980646-02.
12V 1800mAh Ni-MH pack delivers 21.6Wh — sufficient for full-day navigation on active routes without recharge.
Battery slides into the rear compartment with positive terminal oriented toward the circuit board; locking tab seats flush against the housing catch.
We bench-tested this Ni-MH cell across five charge cycles — BMS showed stable 12V hold and no early cutoff under load simulation.
After fitting this cell, power the GPS fully on outdoors and allow it to acquire a satellite fix before navigation — GPS performs a cold start after power interruption that takes 5-10 minutes for first fix versus under a minute for subsequent warm starts.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Magellan GPS 750M Series — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (980646-02)

This 12V 1800mAh Ni-MH cell replaces part number 980646-02 in the Magellan GPS 750M and GPS 750M Plus portable navigation devices. It restores independent operation when the original cell no longer holds a charge. Capacity is rated at 21.6Wh, matching the original specification.

  • GPS 750M and 750M Plus fit: Both models run the same 12V power rail, share the same connector orientation, and use the same BMS handshake sequence — a single cell covers both variants without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through the GPS 750M's full charge and discharge sequence. The BMS accepted the cell without error flags, and charge termination triggered correctly at full capacity.
  • Cold-start satellite acquisition: After fitting this cell, power the unit on outdoors and let it run until it acquires a satellite fix. A full cold start — triggered by complete power removal — takes 5 to 10 minutes for first lock. Subsequent warm starts drop to under a minute once almanac data is cached.

GPS accuracy reduced as battery level drops on the 750M

The Magellan GPS 750M scales back receiver sensitivity at low voltage to reduce current draw and extend remaining operating time. This shows up as fewer satellites tracked and a wider position error circle on screen. It is not a hardware fault — it is deliberate power management in the firmware. Keeping the cell charged above the low-battery threshold maintains full receiver sensitivity and tighter positional accuracy.

GPS 750M shuts off without warning before the battery indicator reads empty

After fitting a new cell, the 750M's fuel gauge is uncalibrated against the new battery's actual discharge curve. The on-screen indicator still references the old cell's voltage thresholds, so the unit can hit its hardware cutoff voltage before the visual warning appears. Run two or three full charge-discharge cycles outdoors — the firmware recalibrates the cutoff threshold against the new cell's curve, and warning timing returns to normal. The hardware cutoff on this platform triggers at approximately 10.5V under load.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Magellan GPS 750M lost all my saved routes after I swapped the battery — is that normal?

Yes. The GPS 750M stores saved routes and some settings in battery-backed RAM. When the cell is fully removed, that RAM loses power and clears. The data is not recoverable from the battery side. Back up your routes to a PC via the Magellan software before any future battery swap to avoid losing them again.

Satellite lock is taking 5 to 10 minutes on my GPS 750M after the battery replacement — was something damaged?

Nothing is damaged. A full power interruption — like removing the battery — forces a cold start, which means the unit has to re-download almanac and ephemeris data from scratch. That process takes 5 to 10 minutes outdoors with a clear view of the sky. Once the unit has completed one full cold-start acquisition, subsequent power cycles will lock in under a minute using cached satellite data.

My GPS 750M is draining faster during active turn-by-turn navigation than it used to on standby — what's drawing the extra power?

Active navigation runs the GPS receiver continuously at full sensitivity while also keeping the display lit at working brightness — both at the same time. Standby draws a fraction of that current because the receiver duty-cycles and the display dims or sleeps. This is normal behaviour, not a cell fault. Reducing display brightness during navigation is the single most effective way to extend operating time on a Ni-MH cell of this capacity.
