Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Midland XTC400 / XTC450 — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BATT17L)
This is a 3.7V, 1800mAh Li-ion cell that replaces the OEM BATT17L battery in the Midland XTC400 and XTC450 action cameras. It slots into the same battery compartment as the original and draws through the same connector. Voltage and capacity match the stock specification exactly.
- XTC400 and XTC450 compatibility: Both models share the BATT17L form factor, connector pinout, and 3.7V supply rail. The camera's power management circuit draws from the same voltage threshold on either body, so one cell fits both without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the XTC400 body. The BMS accepted the cell without triggering a fault state, and the camera powered on and recorded normally across full discharge.
- First-use charge cycle on the XTC400: Charge this cell fully inside the camera body before your first outing. Some action camera BMS systems need one complete in-body charge cycle before the battery-remaining indicator maps correctly to the new cell's discharge curve.
XTC400 battery indicator reading full then dropping suddenly mid-recording
The XTC400 maps its battery percentage to a voltage threshold table calibrated against the original cell's discharge curve. A new third-party cell can discharge along a slightly different curve, causing the indicator to read high until the voltage crosses the first threshold, then jump down sharply. This is a calibration artefact in the camera's firmware, not a cell defect. Running two or three full charge-discharge cycles through the camera body lets the BMS build a more accurate picture of the new cell's behaviour.
XTC400 showing no battery or refusing to power on with a charged replacement cell
If the camera shows a dead-battery icon or fails to boot despite the cell being charged, the BMS authentication check has not yet accepted the replacement. This happens on first install when the cell voltage sits below the camera's minimum wake threshold — typically around 3.4V — after storage. Place the cell in the camera and connect the USB charger for at least 15 minutes, then attempt to power on. If the camera still refuses to start, charge to a measured 3.7V via an external Li-ion charger before reinserting.

Frequently Asked Questions
My XTC400 shows a full battery icon and then cuts out after a short time — is the replacement cell faulty?
Almost certainly not a faulty cell. The XTC400's battery indicator reads voltage at rest, which stays elevated at the top of a charge, then drops steeply once current draw from recording kicks in. The camera cuts power when voltage sags below its low-battery cutoff — around 3.2V — even if the indicator still showed bars. Run two full charge-discharge cycles through the camera body and the indicator will track the cell's actual discharge curve more closely.
The battery percentage on my XTC400 jumps around erratically — 60%, then 80%, then 20% within minutes of recording.
This is a voltage-threshold mapping issue. The XTC400 firmware calculates remaining charge from fixed voltage checkpoints tuned to the OEM cell. A replacement cell with a slightly different discharge curve crosses those checkpoints at unexpected points, making the readout jump. It does not mean the cell is failing. After three full in-camera charge cycles, the readings typically stabilise — charge fully to 4.2V and discharge through recording each time.
My XTC400 records noticeably fewer clips in cold weather with the new battery compared to warm days.
Li-ion cells lose usable capacity below 10°C because internal resistance rises, causing voltage to sag faster under the camera's recording load. The XTC400's BMS cuts power earlier when it sees that sag, even if charge remains. Keep the spare cell in an inner pocket close to your body until you need it — a cell at body temperature holds its voltage under load far better than one that has been sitting in a jacket pocket at 0°C.
