Palm Tungsten E — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (UP383562A A6)

This 3.7V, 900mAh lithium-polymer cell replaces the internal battery in the Palm Tungsten E PDA. It fits the original battery slot and connects to the same board-side connector used on the Tungsten E mainboard. Capacity figures come from product data — 900mAh / 3.33Wh.

  • Tungsten E battery fitment: The Tungsten E uses a fixed internal cell with a board-mounted connector and no user-accessible battery door. The UP383562A A6 matches the cell dimensions (61.20 x 4.52 x 4.42mm) and voltage rail that the Tungsten E power management IC expects. A mismatched voltage causes the device to shut down immediately on boot.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on a Tungsten E unit and confirmed the power management IC accepted the new battery without throwing a charge-fault state. The BMS balanced correctly and the device completed a full boot sequence from a cold start.
  • Sync before you swap: The Tungsten E holds open application data and your current RAM state in volatile memory powered directly by the main battery. Remove the cell without syncing first and that data is gone. HotSync to your desktop before cracking the case open — not after.

Why the Tungsten E loses all data after a battery replacement

The Tungsten E stores active application data, contacts, and calendar entries in SRAM. That SRAM is powered entirely by the main lithium-polymer cell — there is no separate coin cell backup on this model. The moment battery voltage drops to zero during a swap, everything in RAM is wiped. A successful HotSync before removal is the only way to protect that data. After fitting this replacement cell, a HotSync will restore your records from the desktop backup.

A new lithium-polymer cell shipped in storage state may sit below the minimum voltage the Tungsten E boot sequence needs to complete. The device powers on, hits the Palm logo, and stalls — or resets in a loop. Connect the unit to its charger before attempting a first boot and leave it for at least 30 minutes. Once the cell climbs above approximately 3.5V, the boot sequence will complete normally. Do not hold the power button repeatedly — repeated reset attempts drain the cell further before it has charged.

My Tungsten E wiped everything when I swapped the battery — is there any way to get that data back?

The Tungsten E stores all PDA data in SRAM with no coin-cell backup, so a full power loss during the swap erases it completely. If you ran a HotSync before removing the old battery, your desktop backup is intact — open Palm Desktop and restore from the most recent sync. If no sync was done before the swap, the data is not recoverable from the device. Going forward, HotSync before every battery removal.

The Tungsten E keeps resetting itself in a loop after I fitted the new battery — what's happening?

A lithium-polymer cell in storage state often ships below 3.5V, which is too low for the Tungsten E power management IC to sustain a stable boot. The device powers on, fails to hold voltage under the boot load, and resets repeatedly. Plug the unit into its charger without attempting to power it on and charge for 30 minutes before the first boot. Once the cell is above 3.5V, the boot loop stops.

Wireless sync is dropping constantly since I replaced the battery — the old one never did this.

The Tungsten E Bluetooth and IR sync functions are voltage-sensitive — the radio draws a spike of current that a partially charged new cell can't sustain cleanly, causing the connection to drop mid-transfer. This is not a fault with the battery or the radio. Charge the device fully before attempting a wireless sync. Once the cell is at capacity, the voltage holds steady under the radio load and sync completes without dropping.
